SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State softball won its 30
th game of the season with a 7-1 win over Southern Miss. The Bobcats' have won nine of its last 10 games to reach the 30-win landmark for the 6
th consecutive season.
Texas State had its second game of the season with four home runs against the Golden Eagles, highlighted by a career-best two homer night from
Kat Zarate. She went 3-3 on the night with the two home run and a single.
Kate Bubela and
Aiyana Coleman who also homered, with Bubelas being her 7
th of the season, and Coleman her 13
th. All seven RBI came from home runs.
How it Happened:
Maddy Azua started the game in the circle, tossing 7.0 innings and allowing just three hits, no walks, and one earned run while striking out four batters.
Texas State opened the scoring of the game in the second inning, coming off the solo home run by Coleman. She battled a 2-2 count for the solo home run to center field for her 13
th of the season. She'd go on to be walked twice, her second walk being her 47
th of the season to tie the program single season record.
Zarate followed Coleman up with a home run of her own, this time to left center. Zarate's 7
th on the season started off her 3-3, 3 RBI night.
Azua retired the side in order in the 2
nd, getting out in three batters as well in the third after a strikeout turned into two outs as
Megan Kelnar caught the runner stealing at second.
Leading off the fourth inning was Coleman's 46
th walk of the season,
Bailee Slack came into pinch run for her. She'd advance on a single from Zarate. The pair and Bubela would score on her home run back up the middle to make it a 5-0 ball game.
Southern Miss got on the board in the top of the 5
th for their lone run on an RBI ground out after a lead off triple from Kinsley Gordon.
After Azua retired the side in order with two outs via strikeout in the 6
th, Texas State added more runs to its total. With another walk from Coleman to lead off the inning, Zarate did it again. On a full count, Zarate homered to left field to make it a 7-1 ball game.
Despite getting two runners on in the top of the 7
th, the Golden Eagles were not able to add any more runs to their tally and the game ended 7-1 in favor of Texas State.
After today's 7-1-win, Texas State is now 30-16 on the season and stay at 10-6 in Sun Belt play.
