Softball Tops LA Tech 8-3 to Win the Series

Box Score

San Marcos, TexasBrooke Baker finished 3-for-3 from the plate to help guide Texas State (9-28, 4-5 WAC) to a victory over visiting Louisiana Tech (19-17, 5-4 WAC). The Bobcats captured an 8-3 win to tally its second win of the weekend.

LA Tech was the first team to score. The Lady Techsters recorded their third home run of the series when Meghan Knowles hit a solo homer to left field in the top of the second to give LA Tech an early one-run lead.

The Lady Techsters lead would be short lived as Brooke Baker led off the third inning with a single to left field, and it was just what Texas State needed to catch a rhythm. Next up to bat was Jordan Masek who reached base on an error by the pitcher to put runners on first and second.

After a sacrifice bunt by Kelli Baker advanced the runners one base each, Haley Lemons loaded the bases with a walk. Courtney Harris went toe-to-toe with the LA Tech pitcher before coming away with a bases loaded walk to send Baker home for the Cats first run of the game.

It would be a sacrifice fly by Katie Doerre that sent Masek home, followed by a single to center field that allowed both Lemons and Harris to score on the play after the ball got away from the centerfielder.

In the next inning, Harris recorded her second bases loaded walk of the game to put Texas State up 5-1.

LA Tech's Melanie Goff singled up the middle in the top of the fifth inning to push Amanda Krueger home for the Lady Techsters first run of the game since the second inning. The momentum held, as Janna Frandrup recorded an RBI single to left field to bring LA Tech to within two runs of the Cats.

Unfortunately for LA Tech, the game was dominated by the Bobcats. Masek registered a two-run double to left center in the bottom of the fifth inning to provide the Bobcats with a four-run cushion, and then the Cats backed it up in the sixth inning with one more run to help seal the deal.

Ashley Wright (5-11) earned her second win of the weekend after pitching 4.2 innings in the circle. Wright fanned three batters in the victory. Brooke Baker finished 3-for-3 from the plate with three runs scored.

The Bobcats out-hit the Lady Techsters 10-4, while Texas State scored six or more runs in all three games this weekend.

Texas State will return to the field on Tuesday, April 9 when its hosts Baylor in its Annual Strikeout Cancer game. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
