Softball Tops Lamar 5-4 in 10 Innings

Box Score

Beaumont, Texas – The Texas State softball team fought through 10 innings of play to come away with the win over Lamar at Ford Park today. The Cardinals took the early lead, but the Bobcats came back to capture the victory.

Lamar (21-30) jumped out to a 2-0 edge in the second inning after it collected four hits. The Cardinals scored their first run on a single to left field, and two batters later they scored on an error by the Bobcat center fielder.

Texas State (13-33) continued to fight, and in the top of the fifth it started a two-out rally. Haley Lemons started things off with a single to left center, followed by a double to right center by Anna Hernandez. With runners in scoring position, Courtney Harris doubled to right center to push both runners home and tie the game at 2-All.

The Bobcats continued to take advantage of the Cardinals, and after a leadoff walk by Timishia North in the top of the sixth inning, Katie Doerre homered to left center to give Texas State a two-run lead.

The Cardinals came back in the bottom of the seventh and created a rally of their own. After Ashley McDowell reached base on an error, Lamar recorded three hits in its next four at-bats to tie the game at 4-All and force extra innings.

Neither team was able to score in the eighth or ninth inning. Texas State changed that when the international tiebreaker rule came into effect in the 10th inning. The Bobcats used a sacrifice bunt to advance Brooke Baker from second to third base, and then followed it up with a squeeze to score the game-winning run.

Texas State managed to record at least one hit in all innings but the 10th. The Bobcats out-hit the Cardinals 12 to 11 to help aid in the victory, Lemons, Hernandez, Ramirez and Doerre all recorded to hits apiece.

Rayn House (5-15) picked up the win after 4.2 innings in the circle. Lamar's Shannon Millman (14-13) was tagged with the loss after a 4.2 inning performance.

The Texas State softball team will close out its home schedule this weekend when its hosts San Jose State. The Bobcats and Spartans will play a doubleheader on Friday, April 26 beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday's single game contest is slated for 1 p.m.
