Softball Splits Doubleheader with New Mexico State

San Marcos, Texas – Texas State (12-32, 7-7 WAC) and New Mexico State (31-15, 12-2 WAC) split today's doubleheader at Bobcat Softball Stadium. The Aggies grabbed a 1-0 nine inning win in game one, but the Bobcats persevered and captured game two 5-4.

Game 1

New Mexico State's Alex Newman had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning. Haley Lemons broke up the no-no with a single up the middle, followed by a single to left center by Anna Hernandez. After a fielder's choice, the Cats ended the inning on a pop-up to first base.

With runners on first and second in the bottom of the seventh, Courtney Harris hit the ball off the top of the third baseman's glove, but the home ump called it foul which resulted in the run by Lemons being taken away. Texas State was unable to push a runner home, as it grounded out and popped up to end the inning.

Neither team was able to get their offense going in the eighth, despite one hit by the Bobcats.

Kelsey Dodd led off the ninth inning with a double to right center. Pinch runner Brennalyn Nakamura advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt, and later scored the game-winning run on a groundout by Malena Padilla.

The Bobcats went three-up, three-down in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.

The Aggies outhit Texas State, 5-3. Lemons, Hernandez, and Coralee Ramirez each garnered one hit apiece.

Rayn House (4-14) suffered the loss in the circle after pitching a complete game. She fanned two batters during her stint in the circle. Alex Newman recorded the win for her 19th of the season.

Game 2

Jordan Masek led off the first inning with a triple to right center. She didn't have to stay on base long, as she scored on a Kellie Baker RBI single down the right side. Lemons recorded the third-straight hit for Texas State, and advanced a base on the throw to put runners on second and third. Baker was able to score on a squeeze play to give Texas State a 2-0 lead after the first inning.

After a pair of innings with no runs scored, Coralee Ramirez reached home on an RBI single by Macie Hair to right field. Pinch runner Ali Akina scored the Bobcats' second run of the inning after the New Mexico State pitcher made a bad play at the plate.

New Mexico State's Staci Rodriguez changed the game in the fifth inning when she hit a grand slam over the left field wall to tie the game at 4-All.

Macie Hair and Brooke Baker registered back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the sixth inning. Both runners advanced one base each after a successful sacrifice bunt by Masek. K. Baker continued the hitting spree with a single up the middle to push Hair home for the Cats fifth run of the game to break the tie.

Hair led Texas State at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance and one RBI.
