Softball Falls to UT Arlington in the Eighth Inning, 1-0

Box Score

Arlington, Texas –It took eight innings for there to be a winner in game three of the conference series at UT Arlington, but it was the home team that came out on top as the Lady Mavericks captured a 1-0 victory today at Allan Saxe Field.

After going six innings without a run scored by either team, it was time to buckle down and get the game moving in another direction.

The Bobcats (11-30, 6-6 WAC) had a simple plan in the top of the seventh – get runners on base.  Coralee Ramirez started the plan off successfully with a single down the left line. Macie Hair attempted a sacrifice bunt to move Ramirez to second, but the Lady Mavs went for the play at second and got the out. On the next play, Hair was out on a fielder's choice for the Cats second out of the inning. Brooke Keel was able to steal second base, and a single by Brooke Baker provided room for Keel to run home, but UT Arlington saw it coming and made the play at home to end the inning.

UT Arlington (18-21, 3-9 WAC) was unable to score in the bottom of the seventh, and the Bobcats were forced into their seventh extra-inning game this season.

Texas State came up empty in the top of the eighth which left room for UT Arlington to steal the game.

UT Arlington led off the inning with a single, followed by a walk to put runners on first and second. Texas State switched pitchers hoping it would catch the Lady Mavericks off balance and it did. Rayn House entered the game and fanned her first batter for the first out.

The Lady Mavericks took the strikeout, but came back with a single to left field to load the bases. UT Arlington stepped up to the plate and recorded a sacrifice fly to right field with just enough depth to score the runner from third and win the ball game.

Both teams recorded five hits in the game. Kelli Baker continued her solid play over the weekend as she recorded a hit in all three games. She finished Saturday's game with a pair of hits.

Ashley Wright (6-12) registered a career-high of seven strikeouts, but was handed the loss despite her remarkable stint in the circle.

Texas State will host No. 10/11 Texas A&M on Tuesday at Bobcat Softball Stadium. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. The Bobcats will then welcome New Mexico State for a three-game conference series beginning on Friday with a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
