Huntsville, Texas – Texas State belted out 19 hits today – the most by any team under head coach Ricci Woodard, but the Bobcats rally versus Sam Houston State fell one run short. The Bearkats defeated the Bobcats 14-13 in an eight-inning showdown.
The Bobcats fought until the end today as they battled back from five runs down in the seventh inning to take a one-run lead with Sam Houston State still to bat.
Tori Benavidez scored on an RBI single by Cecilia Castillo in the bottom of the seventh to give the Bearkats the tying run and force extra innings.
With Texas State coming up short in the top of the eighth, it was Sam Houston State's turn to make something happen. A two-out RBI single by Benavidez in the eighth inning is what sealed the win for the Bearkats, crushing the Bobcats hopes of a comeback victory.
Texas State's six-run seventh-inning performance was highlighted by a Courtney Harris grand slam over the centerfield wall. The grand slam was the second for Harris in a seven-day span, as she also recorded one versus North Texas on March 1.
Harris finished 3-for-5 with six RBI. Kellie Baker continued her strong play at the plate with a 4-for-6 showing, in addition to three runs scored. Anna Hernandez finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored. The Bobcats as a team finished with a batting average of .432.
Rayn House (0-8) pitched 6.1 innings and fanned seven batters in the one-run loss.
The Bobcats will play at the University of Texas on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m., but will host the Longhorns on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Bobcat Stadium.
