Houston, Texas – The Texas State women's tennis team put up a tough fight, but No. 26 Rice held on for a 4-0 victory over the Bobcats at the Galleria Tennis and Athletic Club on Sunday morning.
Texas State began the day dropping in a No. 2 doubles match when
Monica Pieratt and
Katy Collins suffered an 8-1 loss against Katie Gater and Liat Zimmermann.
Texas State's
Mariana Perez and
Rachel Baldree won their No. 3 match with an 8-3 victory over Daniela Trigo and Solomiya Zinko.
The Owls captured the team point when Natalie Beazant and Dominique Harmath edged Texas State's
Jessica Kahts and
Melissa Hadad, 8-5, in the No. 1 match.
In singles action, Baldree suffered a 6-4, 6-0 loss against Kimberly Anicete in the No. 4 match. Gater won a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Pieratt in the No. 3 match. The Owls clinched the win when Hadad suffered a 6-2, 6-4 loss against Zimmermann in the No. 2 match.
The match was halted with Kahts winning her No. 1 match against No. 80-ranked Harmuth when she won the first set, 7-5, and was leading 5-3 in the second set.
The loss drops Texas State's record to 4-4 overall this season. The Bobcats will look to improve their 1-0 record against WAC teams when Texas State plays Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State and Seattle in San Jose, Calif. on March 21-23.
