San Marcos, Texas – Bobcat softball took their last game of the Texas Shootout to a full 11 innings, before dropping a heartbreaker to conference foe UT Arlington. The visiting Mavericks earned the 3-2 victory in the final game of the tournament.
Texas State (2-12) and UT Arlington (6-4) battled hard through seven eventful innings with neither team able to score a run. The Bobcats had left six runners on base, while the Mavericks stranded four.
Brooke Keel was placed on second with the international run rule in effect in the eighth inning. Keel advanced to third after a fielder's choice, and then scored on a throwing error by the Mavericks catcher to give Texas State a 1-0 lead.
With the Bobcats holding a 1-0 edge, it was the Mavericks turn to fight back. Rachel Forshaw advanced to third on a fielder's choice, while Taylor Zink made it safely to second on the throw.
Two plays later, Texas State made a huge play when Jordan Masek through home to Macie Hair and got the putout for the second out of the game.
The Mavericks were able to load the bases on the next at bat, which resulted in a run scored when Rayn House hit the batter. House composed herself and Texas State was able to get out of the inning without any further damage.
The ninth inning saw both teams come up empty, despite a hard fought effort to get a run across.
In the tenth inning, Timishia North advanced to third on a single by Brooke Keel, but it was a groundout by Kellie Baker that provided enough room for North to score.
UTA tied the game with a single down the right side to lead off the bottom of the inning.
Texas State had the bases loaded in the 11th, but it could not score a run which gave UTA a chance to take the game.
UTA's Jolene Schaeffer laced one to right field to help the Mavericks offense, but it was a liner by Meagan Michelle to right center that sealed the win for UTA in the 11th inning.
Rayn House (0-4) fanned five batters in 7.1 innings of work in the loss. Six different Bobcats recorded a hit in the game.
Teri Lyles (5-1) pitched a complete game to earn her fifth victory in the circle. Michelle finished 3-for-5 for UTA.
Texas State will host the CenturyLink Classic next week from March 1-3. Joining the Bobcats in the tournament will be Purdue, North Texas, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
