Lafayette, La. – Texas State softball concluded the Louisiana Classic with a 2-2 record after splitting on the final day of the tournament. The Bobcats earned a 5-4 win over Mississippi Valley State, and then just missed tripping up Louisiana-Lafayette suffering a 3-2 loss.
Game 1 Box Score
Mississippi Valley State began the game with a leadoff homer to get on the scoreboard first. The Devils followed it up with another run in the second inning after a bases loaded walk.
Texas State would also score on a bases loaded walk that sent Anna Hernandez home in the second inning.
The Devils continued to put forth a positive offensive effort when it tacked on a pair of runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead over the Bobcats.
Haley Lemons had a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the fifth. Courtney Harris followed with an RBI double to left center to score Lemons. With runners on second and third, Ashley Wright tripled to right field to push home both Harris and Hernandez. Wright would later score on an error by the catcher to give Texas State a 4-2 lead and the eventual win.
Wright (2-2) entered the game in the second inning and picked up the win in the circle versus Mississippi Valley State. She allowed five hits and one earned run in 5.1 innings of work. Wright also went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Game 2 Box Score
Louisiana-Lafayette scored in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats tied the game in the second inning when Katie Doerre scored on a bases loaded passed ball. Three innings later, an RBI-single by Lemons to left field scored Kellie Baker to give Texas State a 2-1 edge.
Texas State fought off the Cajuns in the sixth inning, but the home team scored a pair of runs off illegal pitches in the seventh to steal the win this afternoon.
Anne Marie Taylor (0-3) pitched 6.2 innings and fanned five batters. Rayn House (0-2) was credited with the loss.
Baker led the team with five hits at the Louisiana Classic. Hernandez finished with three RBIs and four runs scored.
Texas State will return to San Marcos this week for its first appearance at home this season. The Bobcats are hosting the Texas Shootout from Thursday, Feb. 21 through Sunday, Feb. 24. Baylor, North Texas, UT Arlington, Sam Houston State, and Texas Tech will all be competing in the tournament.
