San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State women's tennis team opens its 2013 schedule with a pair of home matches at the Bobcat Tennis Complex on Saturday and Sunday. The Bobcats will play host to UT Pan American on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Texas State also plays host to St. Edward's University on Sunday beginning at noon.
Texas State returns its entire roster from last year after the Bobcats posted a 14-6 overall record and finished second in the Southland Conference standings with a 9-2 mark.
Headlining the returning players are 2012 All-Conference players
Mariana Perez,
Rachel Baldree,
Jessica Kahts and
Melissa Hadad.
Perez and Baldree earned All-Conference First-Team honors as a No. 3 doubles team after winning each of the 10 league matches. Kahts and Hadad finished the year with an 8-3 league record as Texas State's No. 1 doubles team to earn Second-Team honors. Kahts also was named an All-SLC Second-Team singles player after she finished the year with a 9-2 league record and 16-4 overall mark as Texas State's No. 1 singles player.
Hadad posted a 9-2 league record and was 14-5 overall in No. 2 singles matches. Perez and
Gabriela Rojas each posted 7-4 league records in singles play, while Bérénice Van den Berg won four of her five SLC matches. Texas State also returns sophomore
Francesca Bernes, who had a 7-6 singles record after joining the team in January 2012.
Head coach
Tory Plunkett enters her 10th season at Texas State and owns a 94-82 career record at the school, including a 60-35 record in conference matches.
In addition to the returnees, she has added two additional players to Texas State's roster this season. They are sophomore
Monica Pieratt, a transfer from Arkansas-Fort Smith and freshman
Katy Collins.
In their first year as a member of the Western Athletic Conference, the Bobcats open this season with a seven straight matches at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
Following this week's matches against UT Pan American and St. Edward's, Texas State will play host to Houston on Feb. 10, UTSA on Feb. 15, Northwestern State on Feb. 16, SMU on Feb. 23 and future Sun Belt Conference opponent Louisiana-Monroe on Mar. 2.
