Texas State Track and FIeld Teams Travel To Red Raider Open

After setting a pair of school record and recording several personal best performances, the Texas State men's and women's track and field teams travel to Lubbock, Texas to compete against 54 other teams and 1,255 total individuals in the Texas Tech Red Raider Open at the Texas Tech Athletic Training Center.

The meet begins at 10:00 a.m. with the men's and women's high jump. The first running events are the men's and women's 4x800-meter relays and the men's and women's 5,000 meter run at 11:00 a.m. The preliminary rounds in the 55-meter hurdles and sprints begin at 11:30 a.m.

As the season continues to progress, Boone would like to see her runners to continue competing and maintain their techniques even if they are bumped in their races.

Last week, seniors Danessa Lyssy and Sandra Venegas broke school records in the women's pentathlon and 5,000 meters, respectively. Lyssy ranks third among the region's pentathlon leaders after scoring 3,709 points at Houston. The feat earned her WAC Field Athlete of the Week honors. Venegas is fifth in the region's 5000-meter runners and two other Bobcats, Tina Valenzuela and Pilar Hastings-Smith are listed among the region's top eight pentathlon leaders.

In the men's division, All-American Logan Cunningham cleared 5.20 meters (17-00.75) in the pole vault for the second straight meet. He is eighth among regional leaders in this week's polls. In addition, Tyrone Jackson had the top collegiate time in the men's 800 meters with a season-best time of 1:51.38. His time is the second-fastest time in the WAC this season in just his second race of the season and the fifth-fastest time in school history. Darius Brown recorded a pair of third-place finishes in the shot put and weight throw with career-best indoor marks in each event.

“We had a good start last week with some good performances across the board,” said head coach Dana Boone. “Things are starting to come together and that is what you want to see as a head coach. February is a crucial time in our indoor season as we head towards the conference indoor meet. We are heading in the right direction, but we need to continue improving.”
