– New Mexico State came out on top tonight at Strahan Coliseum with an 86-72 defeat over Texas State. The loss snapped a three-game win streak for the Cats, while the Aggies captured their eighth straight.

Senior Matt Staff had a solid night for the Cats with his third double-double of the season. He finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Corey Stern chipped in 16 points (6-for-8 FG), while Joel Wright (8-of-11 FT) finished with 14 points.

Texas State (7-15, 3-6 WAC) was able to stay in the game in the first half, and managed to take the lead with nine minutes to go in the period after Wright hit a pair of free throws. The Aggies (14-8, 8-2 WAC) went on a 17-7 run late in the second as they took a nine-point advantage into the half.

The Bobcats came out of the locker room ready to close in on the Aggies, but New Mexico State was able to knock down shots to keep Texas State at a distance. After trailing by as many as 15 points in the half, Vonn Jones nailed a fastbreak three-pointer to cut the Aggies lead to eight points with 7:04 remaining in the game.

Unfortunately, Texas State would not get any closer as it came up short against New Mexico State. The Aggies outrebounded the Bobcats 42-33, and connected on 20 free throws to help seal the win

New Mexico State had four players finish in double figures. Bandja Sy led the Aggies with 24 points and 13 rebounds on 9-for-11 shooting. Daniel Mullings scored 22 points and went 10-of-10 from the free throw line. Sim Bhullar and Remi Barry had 10 points apiece.

Texas State trailed at the half, 45-36 after shooting 40 percent from the floor. The Aggies shot 55.6 percent from the floor in the first to grab the halftime lead. Wright and Staff had 11 points apiece to lead the Bobcats.

Texas State will continue home play on Saturday, February 2 when it hosts Denver. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
