Texas State Track & Field Team Post Strong Showings On First Day Of Houston’s Howie Ryan Invitational and Multi’s

The Texas State women's track and field team had three of the top five scores in the women's heptathlon and a second-place finish in the women's 5,000 meters on the first day of the Howie Ryan Invitational inside the Yeoman Field House.
 
In the pentathlon, Danessa Lyssy set a new indoor school record when she scored 3,688 points to finish in second place, while Tina Valenzuela had the third-best score with 3,560 points. Pilar Hastings-Smith also tallied 3,353 points to finish fifth in the event.
 
Lyssy had the top score in two of the five events with 842 points in the high jump and 707 points in the shot put. She cleared 1.69 meters (5-06.50) in the high jump and had a mark of 12.69 meters (41—07.75) in the shot put. Valenzuela's best event on Friday was in the long jump where she had the second-highest point total with 700 points after leaping 5.50 meters (18-00.50).  
 
Sandra Venegas also broke an indoor school record with the second-fastest time in the 5,000 meters as she finished the race with a time of 17:27.24.
 
In the women's weight throw, Jalisa Hall had a throw of 17.45 meters (57.03.00) to finish in fourth place, while Talore Kelly had a throw of 17.08 meters (56-00.50) to finish in sixth place, while Kelsey Titzman finished in eighth place with a mark of 18.78 meters (55-00.75).
 
Hannah McWilliams cleared a career best 3.70 meters (12-01.50) for a sixth-place finish in the women's pole vault. Anicka Newell also cleared 3.55 meters (11-07.50) to finish in eighth place.
 
In the men's division, Timothy Young qualified for Saturday's final in both the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles after winning his heats in both events. He won the fourth heat of the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.93 seconds. He also won the fourth heat in the 60-meter hurdles with the second-fastest overall time of 8.05 seconds.
 
Larron Black also qualified for the hurdles final with the ninth overall fastest time of 8.37 seconds after finishing second in the third heat.  
 
Chelsea Stephen won the fifth heat with the sixth-fastest overall time in the women's 60-meter hurdles with 8.70 seconds to qualify for Saturday's final.
 
Carter Nell also enters the final three events in the men's heptathlon in ninth place with 2,484 points. Nell began the day scoring 656 points with a time of 7.68 seconds in the 60-meter dash. He added 610 points with a long jump of 6.11 meters (20-00.50). His best event of the day was in the shot put when he scored 633 points with a mark of 12.44 meters (40-09.75) in the shot put before clearing 1.75 meters (5-08.75) for 585 points in the high jump.
 
Reggie Reed had a time of 7.02 seconds in the 60 meters and Black had a time of 23.10 seconds in the 200-meter dash.  
 
Darian Brown had a third-place finish in the men's weight throw with a mark of 18.20 meters (59-08.50). Jordan Huckaby also had a throw of 15.47 meters (50-09.25) and Chaz Laijas posted a mark of 15.03 meters (49-03.75)
 
On Saturday, the men's heptathlon continues with the final three events, as Nell will compete in the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run beginning at 10:00 a.m.
 
Saturday's field events begin at 9:00 a.m. with the women's shot put followed by the men's shot put, men's and women's long jumps at 11:00, men's and women's high jump at 1:00, men's pole vault at 2:00 p.m. and the men's and women's triple jumps beginning at 2:30 p.m.
 
The running events begin with the semifinals of the women and men's 60-meter hurdles at noon. The meet is scheduled to conclude with the men's 4x400-meter relay at 5:15 p.m.
