El Paso, Texas – The Texas State soccer team found it tough to overcome an early hole, Wednesday night in El Paso. The Bobcats got off seven shots in a 3-1 loss to UTEP, their first of the season.
Texas State's goal came from Sydney Curry, who received a cross from Tori Hale and one-timed it into the right corner, to cut the Miner lead to 2-1 in the 50th minute. It was Hale's first assist as a Bobcat.
The Miners' first goal came on a cross into the box, which resulted in a scramble, allowing UTEP senior Tess Hal to kick in the back of the net for the game's only goal.
Three minutes into the second half, UTEP made it 2-0 after a shot got over Natalie Gardini's head.
One of the Bobcats' best opportunities in the first half, came in the 42nd minute off a corner kick, but the Miner defense was able to position itself nicely and clear the ball out of danger.
Texas State's defense stepped up in the second half, deterring UTEP's chances after the Miners got the ball in their scoring third. The Bobcats were able to block a Miner shot and clear it in the 58th minute, to extinguish the threat.
UTEP put the pressure on in the 74th minute, unleashing three shots in a row. Texas State was able to block two of the shots and the third hit the post, keeping the score 2-1.
The Miners stretched their lead to 3-1 in the 78th minute on a goal from Hall. She curved the ball into the corner, for her second goal of the game.
Texas State will stay in El Paso for one more game in the Miner Classic on Friday. The Bobcats will have their first meeting all-time against Army, an NCAA Tournament qualifier in 2011.
