Corpus Christi, Texas – The Texas State women's team dropped its first Southland Conference match on Saturday when the Bobcats suffered a 4-3 loss at Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. It was Texas State's second straight loss after dropping a 4-3 decision against Houston last Sunday.
The match began with Texas State dropping the team doubles point for the first time in a SLC match this season as
Gabriela Rojas and
Francesca Bernes began the contest with an 8-4 loss against Chelsea Horan and Sandra Burges in the No. 2 match. Then,
Rachel Baldree and
Mariana Perez winning the No. 3 match by a score of 8-6 over Mia Matuszak and Stefania Nicolae to even the score.
But, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won the team point when
Jessica Kahts and
Melissa Hadad suffered an 8-5 setback in the No. 1 match against Mirna Cicak and Doris Kuselj.
In singles play, Kahts and Hadad came back to win the top two matches and
Mariana Perez also won the No. 5 match to give the Bobcats three team points.
Kahts won the No. 1 match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Cicak and Hadad won the first set in the No. 2 match by a score of 6-3 before Kuselj retired with an injury.
Baldree suffered a 6-0, 6-1 setback in her No. 3 match versus Burgess and Rojas dropped a 6-3, 6-1 loss against Nicolae.
Perez captured Texas State's third victory with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Horan. In the No. 6 match, Bernes suffered a hard-fought 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 loss against Matuszak.
The loss drops Texas State's overall record to 10-4 and 5-1 in Southland Conference play. It was Texas State's second straight loss after dropping a 4-3 decision against Houston last Sunday.
The Bobcats will travel to San Antonio for another SLC match against UTSA in the annual Maroon-Orange rivalry match at the UTSA Tennis Center on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
