San Marcos, Texas
– Five Bobcats scored in double figures to lead Texas State past Fordham, 86-76 tonight at Strahan Coliseum. The victory gave Texas State its seventh-straight season opening win at home to start the 2012-13 season off on a high note.

In his Texas State debut, junior transfer Joel Wright registered a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds.  Senior forward Matt Staff collected 17 points and nine rebounds. With a pair of blocked shots tonight, Staff improved his career total to 58 to tie for fourth all-time on the Texas State charts. Corey Stern chipped in 16 points and nine rebounds in his Bobcat debut, while guards Vonn Jones and Wesley Davis had 10 points apiece.

Texas State led by as many as 10 points in the first half, when Stern dunked the ball with 14:28 to go in the half. The Bobcats made 10-of-13 (.769) free throws in the first half, and held a slight rebound advantage over the Rams, 22-20.

The Bobcats led by as many as 17 points in the second half when Reid Koenen hit a trey from deep to give Texas State a 61-44 advantage. Fordham managed to cut the home team's lead down to 65-60 with a little over six minutes remaining, but that's as close as the Rams would get. Stern and Jones combined for 14 of the Bobcats' final 21 points to help lift Texas State to its first win of the season.

Texas State finished 25-of-35 (.714) from the free throw line and .422 percent from the floor. Tonight was the first time Texas State had five players score in double figures since Nov. 15, 2011, when it defeated Howard Payne, 96-55.

Fordham's Chris Gaston led the Rams with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Branden Frazier added 18 points, while Bryan Smith had 16 points. The Rams shot .439 percent (29-66) from the floor, and .583 percent (14-24) from the charity stripe. The Rams were held to four made three-pointers.

Texas State will continue its three-game home stint when it plays UT-Tyler on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m.
