Anchorage, Alaska – Three Bobcats scored in double figures but it wasn't enough as Charlotte topped Texas State, 73-64, in the quarterfinals of the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout tonight at Sullivan Arena.
Wesley Davis led Texas State with 15 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Matt Staff chipped in 14 points, while Joel Wright added 13 points.
After being down by as many as nine points in the half, Texas State got a boost from Vonn Jones midway through the second as he recorded back-to-back buckets to bring the Bobcats to within four points.
Texas State found its three-point shot in the second half, connecting on six long range shots. The long ball dug Texas State out of a few holes during the game. The biggest shot may have been a three-pointer from deep by Staff that tied the game at 62-All with 5:28 remaining.
The Bobcats trailed Charlotte by three points with 1:49 to go in the game, but a run by the 49ers helped them come away with the 73-64 victory in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
The first half was a fairly evenly matched contest as neither team took more than a four-point lead. The 49ers held a 29-28 advantage heading into the locker room. It was a low scoring half as neither team shot above 40 percent in the period, while both teams connected on only three treys apiece.
Texas State will continue play in the Great Alaska Shootout, tomorrow when it faces Loyola Marymount at 6 p.m. CT at Sullivan Arena.
