San Marcos, Texas – Despite a strong first half, which saw the Texas State soccer team outshoot Louisiana Tech, 6-2, it was not enough as the Lady Techsters put together a strong second half to come away with a 2-0 win, Friday night at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
La. Tech broke the 0-0 tie with 26:00 to go in the second half. Rosie Lethbridge stole the ball from a Bobcat defender and had her initial shot stopped by Natalie Gardini. The ball then bounced right back to Lethbridge who put the rebound in for the Lady Techster lead.
It became 2-0 10 minutes later when La. Tech got behind the Bobcat defense and was able to go 1-on-1 with Gardini, and beat her in the upper right hand corner for the insurance goal.
Texas State controlled the ball for the first 25 minutes of the match. In that time the Bobcats registered three shots, and were able to keeper La. Tech out of the attacking third. The Lady Techsters did not register a shot until the 12:55 mark of the first half, thanks in part to the tight pressure applied by the Bobcat defenders, which did not allow for much breathing room for La. Tech's forwards.
Offensively, Texas State had two quality chances in the first 45 minutes. First, Lynsey Curry used some sharp cutbacks against the Lady Techster defense, at the 29:30 mark, weaving her way through three defenders, then launching a shot which forced the La Tech goalkeeper to dive to her left, stopping the shot.
The second near-goal attempt came with 15 minutes before half. Like Curry's move earlier in the half, Tori Hale weaved through three defenders before being fouled at the top of the 18-yard box. Taylor Person had a free kick at the top of the box, but was blocked, then took the rebound and sent it wide left.
Unfortunately in the second half, the offense didn't come often enough as the Bobcats recorded just three shots, which was enough to maintain a 9-7 advantage overall.
Texas State will return to the pitch a week from Friday on Oct. 19, for Senior Day. The Bobcats will honor their seniors following the match against New Mexico State. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
