Box Score San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State soccer team beat UTEP for the first time since 2004, taking down the Miners 1-0 in overtime. Taylor Kelley scored the game's only goal just a minute into the extra period.
In the extra period Serena Hines got a pass right in front of the goal and fired it right off the UTEP goalkeeper, allowing the ball to roll to Kelley's feet. She collected it and shot it past the Miners, to improve the Bobcats' record to 2-3.
The Bobcats had a good scoring opportunity in the 15th minute as Sydney Curry dribbled around a defender and ripped a shot with her left foot. The attempt was deflected and Kendell Webber settled the rebound and let fly a shot of her own that UTEP goalkeeper Sarah Dilling had to sprawl to her left to save.
The Miners' first prime opportunity came in the 25th minute when forward Brittany Kindzierski snuck behind the Texas State defense for a 1-on-1 with Bobcat goalkeeper Lauren Frazier, but Frazier was up to the task, using her body to stop the attempt and keep the game at a 0-0 tie.
The Bobcats had a look at an empty goal in the 35th minute when Andrea Mauk and Jourdan Brown converged on the UTEP goal. Mauk and Dilling collided allowing Brown to take a shot that appeared to have no one in front but a Miner defender stepped just in front of the shot to deflect it left of the goal.
UTEP had another opportunity just before the half when forward took it to the endline, drawing Frazier out of the goal, but Frazier was able to get her hand on it and stop it, allowing Brenna Smith to clear it out, keeping the game scoreless headed to the break.
13 minutes into the second half, Bobcat midfielder Andrea Mauk sent a ball in to Erica Michaud who appeared to have a 1-on-1 opportunity, but a Miner defender cut her off as she got inside the 18 yard box.
UTEP's Tess Hall sent a touch pass to Kindzierski who was all alone with Frazier, but again Lauren was up to the task, stopping one of UTEP's 16 shots on the day en route to her second shutout of the year, and sixth of her career at Texas State.
Later in the second half Michaud had another great chance, settling a throw in from Kelley before firing a shot to the right corner. Dillinger got airborne to catch the shot before it could cross the goalline.
The Bobcats return to action on Friday Sept. 9 at 7 p.m., in Waco against Baylor.
