Huntsville, Texas – The Texas State women's tennis team won four of their six singles matches to overcome a 1-0 deficit and defeat Sam Houston State 4-3 in a Southland Conference match at the McAdams Tennis Center on Sunday morning.
Sam Houston State won two of the three doubles matches to claim the team point and grab a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Texas State's Melissa Hadad and Jessica Kahts defeated Nadia Dubanksaya and Tatayana Postikova 8-4 in the top doubles match. In the number-two doubles match, Sam Houston State's Sheridan Currie and Cally Woerner defeated Gabriela Rojas and Bérénice Van Den Bergh 8-4. In the No. 3 doubles match, Jessica Laing and Mariana Perez were edged 8-6 by Imke Jagau and Natalie Petaia to give the Bearkats the doubles team point.
In singles action, Kahts defeated Jagau 6-0, 6-4 in the top singles match up, while Hadad won her No. 2 match over Postnikova by a score of 6-4, 6-4. Jessica Laing defeated Sheridan Currie 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 4 match and Mariana Perez won her No. 5 match 6-1, 6-1 over Botha.
In the final two singles matches, Gabriela Rojas and Van Den Bergh both suffered hard-fought matches that were settled in the third-set.
Rojas lost her match by a score of 4-6, 7-5, 10-6 against Dubyanskaya, while Van Den Bergh fell 6-2, 5-7, 10-6 against Petaia.
The victory evens Texas State's record at 7-7 overall and improves its record to 3-4 against Southland Conference teams. The win also came after Texas State had suffered three straight losses in Southland Conference road matches against Northwestern State, UT Arlington and Stephen F. Austin.
