Thibodaux, La. - The Texas State women's tennis team is growing up fast this season as the Bobcats opened their final Southland Conference road trip with a 7-0 victory over Nicholls at the Colonel Tennis Complex on Saturday.
It was Texas State's fourth straight victory, and marks the second consecutive match in which the Bobcats have served a shutout with a roster full sophomores and freshmen. Last Sunday, Texas State defeated UTSA 7-0 in San Marcos. The Bobcats won their previous two matches at Sam Houston State (4-3) and against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (5-2).
In Saturday's match, the Bobcats captured the team doubles point with 8-4 victories in all three matches. Jessica Kahts and Melissa Hadad defeated Florina Nosca and Mariana Ljoshevska in the top match. Gabriela Rojas and Bérénice Van Den Bergh won their No. 2 doubles match over Natalia Zamora and Sumana Kalyanasundaram. In the No. 3 match, Jessica Laing and Mariana Perez defeated Tatiana Denezhkina and Melissa Harrison.
In the No. 1 singles match, Kahts won her second straight singles match with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Nosca.
Hadad posted her sixth straight victory in No. 2 singles match as she dominated Saturday's match against Zamora with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Zamora had entered Saturday leading the Colonels with 11 victories.
Rojas won her third straight No. 3 singles match with a 6-1, 7-5 victory of Kalyanasundaram.
Laing also had to use a super tiebreaker in the third set for the second straight week to win her No. 4 match against Denezhkina. Laing dropped the first set 4-6, but came back to win the second set 7-5 and captured the super tiebreaker by a score of 10-6.
Mariana Perez has the second-longest winning streak on Texas State's roster as she won her fifth straight No. 5 match with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Ljoshevska.
Texas State's final point came from Van Den Bergh, who also won her third match in a row with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Harrison in the No. 6 match.
The victory improves Texas State's record to 10-7 overall and the Bobcats are 6-4 against Southland Conference teams this season heading into their final SLC regular season match at Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday. The Bobcats also will play in the Southland Conference Tournament on April 29-May 1 in San Antonio.
