San Marcos, Texas – After 14 years at Texas State, head women's basketball coach Suzanne Fox has announced that this year will be her last. Fox has decided to retire and pursue other administrative opportunities on the Texas State campus.
A two-time Southland Conference Coach of the Year (2000, 2008), Fox guided the Bobcats to its first WNIT win in 2008 over Prairie View A&M, 84-83. That season she led the team to a 21-win season, the most wins recorded by a Texas State women's basketball team in the NCAA Division I ranks.
“Suzanne has been a tremendous ambassador for Texas State University as our women's basketball coach,” Texas State Athletic Director Larry Teis said. “No coach cares more for their student athletes both on and off the floor than Suzanne. You also can't ignore her graduation rate, team GPA, conference championship, and our first ever post season victory in the National Invitational Tournament. She is not only a great women's basketball coach, but a great friend as well.”
For her career, Fox has amassed 174 wins, the most of any women's basketball coach at Texas State, surpassing Judy Rinker's 165, who coached from 1966-1975.
During her 14-year stint at Texas State, Fox has coached six All-Southland Conference First-Team members and 14 to the second and third teams. The Bobcats have claimed one SLC Freshman of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and two SLC Players of the Year in Tori Talbert (2003) as well as Joyce Ekworomadu (2008) under Fox.
Prior to coming to Texas State, Fox was both a player and coach at Abilene Christian. During her five-year tenure at Abilene Christian, Fox coached two National Players-of-the-Year and two First-Team All-Americans. Her teams had four 20-win seasons, and one 30-win season in 1995-96 when Abilene Christian ended year with a 31-2 record and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division II Tournament. That season, Fox was named the WBCA National Coach of the Year. In addition, Fox led the Wildcats to two Lone Star Conference championships.
As a player with the Wildcats, Fox was named GTE Second-Team Academic All-America, First-Team All-LSC, Conference MVP, All-Academic LSC and LSC Defensive Player of the Year. She remains one of the top seven career scoring leaders with 1,502 points and ranks among the top ten single season leaders with a scoring average of 18 points as a senior.
Presently, Fox serves as the chair for the Carol Eckman Award committee. The award is given to an active WBCA coach who best demonstrates the character of the late Carol Eckman, the mother of the collegiate women's basketball national championship. She also has served as a clinician for the NCAA's Youth Education Sports Program (YES) at the WBCA National Convention, and as the WBCA Conference Captain for the Southland Conference.
“I would like to thank the Texas State University and San Marcos community for all their support of me over the last 14 years as the head women's basketball coach,” Fox said. “I have been truly blessed. I am forever indebted to Michael Alden, Dr. James Studer and the late Dr. Jerome Supple for entrusting me at the tender age of 29 with management of the women's basketball program at Texas State. They provided me with an incredible opportunity.”
A national search for her replacement will begin immediately. Fox will coach her final game on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. against Sam Houston State.
