Fullerton, Calif. – The Texas State women's tennis team concluded its two-match trip in California with a 6-1 victory over Cal State Fullerton at the Titan Tennis Courts on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bobcats opened the afternoon capturing the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. Texas State posted its first doubles victory when Jessica Laing and Mariana Perez defeated Karina Akhmedova and Katie Nichols 8-1.
Texas State's second win in doubles came in the No. 2 match when Gabriela Rojas and Bérénice Van Den Bergh won an 8-5 decision over Megan Sandford and Morgan McIntosh 8-5. In the No. 1 match, Jessica Kahts and Melissa Hadad were edged 8-4 by Tiffany Mai and Monica Rodriguez.
In singles play, the Bobcats won five of the six matches as Kahts, Rojas, Van Den Bergh and Stephanie Gonzales won their matches in dominating fashion. Kahts won the No. 1 match 6-2, 6-2 over Mai. Rojas also won her No. 3 match 6-2, 6-2 over Rodriguez, while Van Den Bergh defeated Akhmedova 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 5 match and Gonzales shut out Nichols 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 match.
In addition, Hadad won the No. 2 match 6-4, 7-5 over McIntosh.
The only point that Cal State Fullerton scored in the match in the No. 4 match when Laing lost the third-set tiebreaker 10-7 after winning the first set 6-3 and dropping the second set 7-5.
The victory came after the Bobcats dropped a 7-0 decision at Cal State Northridge on Tuesday and improved Texas State's overall record to 6-4 heading into next week's Southland Conference matches against Northwestern State and UT Arlington. The Bobcats will play Northwestern State on Friday, March 25, in Denton at 3:00 p.m. The original match between the two teams was canceled on March 5 due to rain in the Natchitoches area. Texas State will play at UT Arlington on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m.
