Houston, Texas – Freshmen Jessica Kahts and Bernice Van Den Bergh won a pair of singles matches, but Texas State suffered its first loss in a dual match this spring as Houston defeated the Bobcats 6-2 at the John Hoff Courts on Saturday.
After dropping the first set in the top singles match 6-2, Kahts came back to win the final two sets to earn a victory over Celia Fraser. Kahts won the second set 6-0 and overpowered Frazer 10-4 to win the third set.
Van Den Bergh scored Texas State's other team point after winning her No. 6 match over Jo Garvey in straight sets 6-3, 6-0.
Houston won the other singles matches and captured the doubles point to pull out their fourth victory of the spring.
Melissa Hadad fell 6-2, 6-4 to Giorgia Pozzan in the No. 2 singles match. Gabriela Rojas suffered a 6-1, 6-2 loss against Bryony Hunter in the No. 3 match, while Houston's Maja Kazimieruk won the No. 4 match over Jessica Lang 6-1, 6-0. Texas State's Mariana Perez also fell 6-1, 6-0 against Joanna Kacprzyk in the No. 5 match.
Laing and Perez won their doubles match in 10-5 tiebreaker as they defeated Kacprzyk and Kazimienuk 8-7 in the No. 3 match.
In the top doubles match, Kahts and Hadad suffered a hard-fought loss as Fraser and Pozzan won the match 8-6. The Cougars also won a tough No. 2 doubles match as Hunter and Garvey edged Rojas and Van Den Bergh 9-7.
Texas State will continue their weekend road trip in Houston when the Bobcats play at Rice on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m.
