San Marcos, Texas – In what was one of the most exciting games of the year thus far, the Texas State soccer team lost in heartbreak fashion, as Stephen F. Austin scored the game's only goal with 23 seconds remaining in regulation to win 1-0, Sunday at Bobcat Soccer Complex.
With under a minute to play in regulation, Stephen F. Austin sent a ball in the box. Natalie Gardini deflected the ball away, but the SFA forward kept it alive and a fight for the loose ball ensued, until Kyle Louw was able to get control of it and knock it into the empty net as Gardini was still recovering to get back.
For Texas State, one of the team's highlights in the game came with five minutes before halftime. Kelsey Bernard played a long ball on the ground that appeared to be harmless originally. However Gabbi Cottee sprinted to get by a defender and tapped it away from the goalkeeper's hands before uncorking a shot that was deflected by an SFA defender and over the endline for a corner.
In the first 45 minutes Texas State owned a 8-4 shot advantage, allowing no shots on goal for the Lady Jacks.
Six minutes into the second half the Lady Jacks generated their first good scoring chance of the day, when Kylie Louw sent a ball into Chelsea Raymond inside the 18-yard box, but Raymond's shot went wide.
The Bobcats best chance of the second half came on a free kick by Emma Staley from 40 yards out. Her shot was right on line, but just a little too high and it sailed over the net.
Gardini got her first start of the year, facing 13 shots, with two saves. She is now 1-1-0 on the year after coming in relief of Lauren Frazier on Friday to help preserve the shutout of Sam Houston State, 1-0.
Texas State returns to action next Sunday to renew the I-35 Rivalry, at 1 p.m. against UTSA at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
