Women's Tennis Defeats Prairie View A&M To Open 2011 Spring Schedule

The Texas State women's tennis team dominated two doubles matches and came back to sweep all seven singles matches at the Bobcats opened their 2011 spring schedule with a 7-0 victory over Prairie View A&M on Saturday morning at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.

 

The Bobcats opened their season in dominant fashion as they took less than 30 minutes to win the doubles point with victories in the second and third-seeded matches. Gabriela Rojas and Bérénice Van Den Bergh teamed to defeat Alejandra Barrera and Raven Lewis 8-1 in the number-two match, while Jessica Laing and Mariana Perez won 8-0 over Lise Karenzi and Alix Thomas in the number three match.  After Texas State won the doubles point, the top-seeded match between Texas State's Melissa Hadad and Jessica Kahts were leading Prairie View A&M's Brittany Harrell and Lerato Ndlovu 5-2 before the match was suspended.

 

“That may be the quickest doubles matches we have played in my eight years here,” said Texas State head coach Tory Plunkett. “We came out mentally focused and played every point like it was match point. If we continue preparing the same way for each match this season, we will win every match.”

 

The Bobcats also earned every point in singles play as Kahts defeated Ndlovu 6-0, 6-3 in the top-seeded match. In the number-two match, Hadad defeated Harrell 6-1, 6-2, and Rojas won the number-three match, 6-1, 6-4 over Raven Lewis.

 

The number four-seeded match was decided in three sets as Jessica Laing won 10-3 in the tie breaker over Alejandra Barrera after Laing won the first set 6-0, and Barrera bounced back to win the second set 6-4.

 

Perez won her number-five singles match, 6-0, 6-3 over Thomas and Van Den Bergh won the number-six singles match 6-2, 6-1 over Lise Karenzi.

 

In addition, Stephanie Gonzales defeated Paige Jackson 6-0, 6-1 in the other singles match.

 

Texas State also will play host to UT Pan American on Saturday afternoon.
