ARLINGTON, Texas - Despite heavy rain the 2010 Southland Conference Track and Field Championships got underway today at Maverick Stadium in Arlington, Texas. With the first day wrapped up, the Texas State men sit in third place, while the women are in tenth.
Senior Daniel Schmidt picked up a fifth place showing in the men's hammer throw as the Graham, Texas native recorded a throw of 54.18 meters (177-09) to earn four points for the men. Also performing well in the field events was freshman thrower Kelsey Titzman who placed 11th in the women's hammer event with a distance of 44.17 meters (144-11).
On the track, Heather Bullin placed seventh in the 10,000 meters, crossing the line in 37:00.33.
After day one of the heptathlon, Danessa Lyssy sits in third place with 2,871 points and reigning champion Valerie Hancock is in fifth with 2,826. Lyssy's best performance of the day came in the shot put where she placed first in the event with an 11.18 meter throw in the shot put. Hancock took first in the high jump and second in the 100-meter hurdles.
The track and field championships will continue tomorrow at 9 a.m. at Maverick Stadium.
