San Marcos, Texas – Texas State bounced back from its first conference loss with an SLC win over Central Arkansas. Texas State improved to 7-5 overall and 1-1 in SLC play while UCA dropped to 4-6 and 0-2-1 in conference.
“I thought UCA came in with a great game plan,” said head coach
Kat Conner. “It made it tough for us to break them down. It took us a long time, but we kept trying and we just took a half chance and got the ball in.”
The Bobcats came out with a high tempo, getting five shots within the first 25 minutes. Each shot was to no avail though as UCA goalkeeper recorded 3 saves in the first period.
The ball was kept away from the Texas State goal for most of the first period, as UCA was held to zero shots. The defensive struggle continued until the end of the first with both teams tied at 0-0.
The second period started much like the first with Texas State taking another quick five shots. The Bobcats were unable to capitalize on the aggressive play as the score remained tied.
The Bobcats took the lead with 13 minutes to go when sophomore
Serena Hines found the back of the net from 20 yards out. The goal proved to be the only score needed for the Bobcats to gain the victory.
“We did well to break the first initial pressure, and I guess Serena thought she saw the keeper out and took a chance and caught the keeper a little bit too far off her line,” Conner said.
The Bobcats outshot UCA by 13 shots, holding them to only one shot on the night.
“I think the defensive play goes back to the two senior defenders, Elting and Fagan,” Conner said. “You know they want a championship so they're going to do everything they can to keep a clean sheet for us.”
Texas State will face Northwestern State in the second of a two game home stand on Sunday Oct. 10 at Bobcat Soccer Complex.
