The Jarrett Ryan Whittington Leadership Academy is a comprehensive student-athlete leadership program within the athletic department at Texas State University.  Through this academy, student athletes will learn what is necessary to be successful leaders at Texas State, on their team, in their communities, and beyond their years here in San Marcos.

This leadership program currently consists of workshops that selected student-athletes attend once a week to develop leadership skills in the off season.  Programs have consisted of coach, faculty and Bobcat Club speaker presentations regarding relevant leadership topics.

The leadership programming will aim to afford selected student-athlete the opportunity to discover and develop his/her strengths, values, goals, and vision as an individual, focusing on the well-being of the whole person.   These components will be interwoven within the Academy to provide student-athletes a holistic leadership experience.

Past Topics that have been discussed:
  • How to be a Good Teammate
  • Performing under Pressure
  • Establishing Accountability
  • Decision Making
  • Responsibility
  • Building Confidence
  • Preparing for Success
The J. Ryan Whittington Leadership Academy will further support and educate our student-athletes to maximize their potential at Texas State and be successful in preparing for their future lives.

The naming of this programming is due to the Generosity of the Whittington Family who wanted to continue the legacy of their son Ryan.

“The J. Ryan Whittington Leadership Academy is a perfect opportunity for us to continue Ryan’s legacy at Texas State University.  Ryan loved Texas State University and was a proud Bobcat.  My family and I hope this academy will embody many of his character traits such as determination, resilience, integrity and having the highest core values.  We believe this is a great opportunity to continue to touch the lives of our student-athletes by empowering them to be great role models and future leaders in life.” Gary Whittington
