SAN MARCOS, Texas - After two hours of lightning delay prior to Thursday night's contest, No. 21 Texas State (4-0-1) remained unbeaten when it battled to top East Texas A&M (1-2-1) at Bobcat Soccer Complex.
The Bobcats broke open the scoring in the 20th minute, when
Constance Agyemang kicked it back to
Matsuri Tsutsui against her momentum who delivered a strong cross into the box looking for
Kaylie Smith. The feed deflected off the leg of a defending Lion and into the back of the net for an own goal and an early Bobcat lead.
Back-and-forth possession battles were the story through the remainder of the first frame as the score held into the half.
Agyemang was inches away from doubling the advantage well into a hard-fought second half, when she spun and made a right-footed effort that found the left post in the 69th minute. Just a minute later, Agyemang would keep the pressure and deliver a cross for
Victoria Meza who deposited a header attempt but was saved by the Lion keeper.
A back pedaling
Caitlyn Draper tracked a Lion shot on goal taken from roughly 30 yards out and left her feet to tip the ball just above the crossbar and maintain the one goal lead late in the 78th minute. The Bobcat keeper would deny an East Texas A&M corner in the following sequence when she leapt and pulled it down in traffic for her second consecutive four save match.
Annabelle Fisher netted her first career goal in the 86th minute rebounding the ball deflecting from the cross of
Victoria Meza to double the Bobcat lead and finalize the 2-0 victory.
"East Texas A&M is very good," shared head coach
Steve Holeman. "I think they're going to do extremely well in the Southland and it was a battle, it came down to the wire. We talked to the team about the ranking and they know we have a target on our back. Everybody's going to bring their best game and you can see that tonight. We had to grind this one out, but it was a good win."
