SAN MARCOS, Texas - No. 21 Texas State (5-0-1) recorded its fifth win of the season when it held control for all 90 minutes over Texas Southern (1-3-1) on Sunday night at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
Texas State got the scoring started for the third consecutive game when
Matsuri Tsutsui delivered her team-best third assist on a cross to allow
Victoria Meza to find the net with a header in the eighth minute.
Doubling an early lead for the Bobcats was sophomore
Alexis Montgomery, who created her own space and broke free from the Tiger defender just outside the 18-yard box and sent home a strike over the head of the keeper for her first goal of the season.
Victoria Meza notched her third brace of the season in just 19 minutes.
Jenny Ngankem deposited a long ball from the Bobcat side of the field to lead Meza, who won the foot race and one-touched the ball over the head of the Texas Southern goalkeeper to take a 3-0 advantage into halftime.
A foul was issued to Texas Southern two minutes into the second half, setting up a penalty kick attempt for
Nina Norshie who cashed in her second goal of the season sneaking it by the right side and out of the reach of the correct-guessing keeper.
Tsutsui added a fifth Bobcat goal in the 57th minute, hammering home a shot perfectly placed in the top-right of the net. The sophomore tallied an assist and a goal in the match.
"We looked at Texas Southern's result on Thursday night, playing UTSA ending in a tie, and the Roadrunners are very good. We knew we had to bring our best effort tonight, and I'm proud of the girls that they did just that. We came out firing on all cylinders after talking about being relentless this week, controlling the scoring and not letting up. They showed it tonight, so just a really good effort."
It's the second consecutive shutout for the Bobcats, and the largest margin of victory since the 6-1 result over Southern Miss on Oct. 18, 2025. Texas State won the possession game, proven by outshooting the Tigers 22 shots to five, 10 of which were on target. Between the posts,
Brooklyn Escobar made her first start of the 2026 campaign and pulled in three saves.
