SAN MARCOS, Texas – Seven home runs were hit by Texas State (33-22, 15-14 Sun Belt) Friday night in a 12-9 victory over Marshall (23-29, 13-16 Sun Belt) from Irvine-Rasmussen Ballpark to clinch the series. The Bobcats also clinched a spot in the upcoming Sun Belt Conference Tournament and still have an opportunity to reach a top six seed.
Â
The seven long balls increased TXST's total to 105 on the season. It is tied for the eighth most ever by a Sun Belt team in conference history.
Â
Manny Salas went 4-for-5 with three homers runs. Also leaving the yard multiple times was
Clayton Namken with two. The freshman finished 3-for-3 with three RBI and drew two walks. Also hitting a round tripper was
Chase Mora and
Jaquae Stewart, who scored three times.
Â
Rashawn Galloway hit two doubles on the night to increase his season total to 25. Driving in a run apiece was Bennet Fryman and
Justin Vossos.
Â
Picking up the win was
Kyle Froehlich (4-2) as he threw the last three innings with three strikeouts and allowed a run on four hits. Charlie Krebs (2-3) surrendered six runs on six hits in 3.1 innings to take the loss.
Â
Dylan Kerbow tossed 2.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
Wade Cooper recorded a strikeout but gave up four runs on five hits and three walks in the first 2.1 innings.
Â
Salas opened the scoring when he sent a 1-1 offering over the left centerfield wall with one gone in the first.
Â
The Thundering Herd ended their scoreless streak in the series with four runs in the third to take the lead.
Â
It was a short-lived advantage as Salas, Stewart and Namken opened the bottom of the frame with back-to-back-to-back home runs. The Bobcats scored three more runs in the fourth on singles from Stewart and Vossos and another when Fryman reached on a fielder's choice.
Â
Marshall went back in front in the top of the sixth with another four-run frame. All of the runs came via homers that included a three-run shot from Evan Bottone.
Â
Namken led off the next frame by working a free pass. After the next two batters were retired, Mora sent the first pitch he saw over the left field wall for a home run. The two RBI gave the senior 181 in his career to pass Paul Goldschmidt for the program's career record.
Â
The Thundering Herd would tie the game in the seventh again when Bottone beat out a grounder down the third baseline for a single that plated a run.
Â
With two gone in the bottom of the inning, Salas sent a 3-1 offering to left field for his third long ball of the night. Namken followed with a two-run round tripper over the scoreboard in right centerfield to cap off the scoring for the night.
Â
Sunday's regular season and series finale is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
