Vossos Walks It Off in Extras to Complete Sweep

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Junior Justin Vossos's second home run of the game was a walk-off solo shot in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Texas State (34-22, 16-14 Sun Belt) a 5-4 victory over Marshall (23-31, 13-17 Sun Belt) Saturday afternoon. The victory completed a sweep of the Thundering Herd and clinched the No. 6 seed in the upcoming Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

Vossos finished the afternoon 2-for-3 at the plate with two walks. Also recording a multi-hit game was Clayton Namken with two base knocks and he scored a run. Blake Beheler plated two runs on a long ball and Brady Bolles finished with an RBI, a run, a walk and was hit by a pitch.

Jesus Tovar (8-2) picked up the win after throwing two scoreless innings and striking out a batter. Taking the loss was Alex Caudill (1-1) as he gave up the walk-off homer after throwing 1.2 innings.

Starting on the mound was Cade Smith but he went just two innings with four runs allowed on six hits. Alizaeh Gutierrez came out of the bullpen and shut down the Marshall offense for six shutout innings. The lefty allowed just two hits and walks while striking out three.

The Herd jumped out to a two-run advantage in the first behind solo homers from Evan Bottone and Jackson Halter. Two more runs were tacked on in the third by the visitors to go up 4-0.

Boles led off the fifth and was plunked on the first pitch to him. A 2-0 offering was smashed down the left field line by Beheler. The ball traveled 399 feet for the freshmen's second long ball of the season and cut the deficit in half.

The next inning saw Vossos connect on a 2-2 offering to left centerfield. The ball got caught in the strong southerly wind and went over the fence to make it a 4-3 contest.

In the bottom of the eight, Namken singled to left field with one gone. Following a fly out to the next batter, the Herd made a pitching that backfired. Davis Gunn walked Vossos and then plunked Chase Mora to load the bases. Boles took the next four pitches for a free pass that brought in the game-tying run.

Vossos came to the plate with one out in the 10 and sent the first pitch he saw 391 feet to left field for the walk-off home run in Texas State's finale regular season game as a Sun Belt member.

Next up for the Bobcats is the conference tournament in Montgomery, Alabama. TXST will take on App State at 9 a.m. on Wednesday from Dabos Park.
