SAN MARCOS, Texas – For the first time since 2019, Texas State (23-10) recorded a shutout in a midweek contest after defeating Stephen F. Austin (18-16) 10-0 in seven innings on Wednesday at Irvine-Rasmussen Ballpark. It was also the first home midweek shutout since 2014.
Â
The shutout was the sixth of the season and is the third most ever in a season. The program record is seven that was set in 1994 and matched in 2012.
Â
Four Bobcat hurlers combined to one-hit the Lumberjacks. An accomplishment that hasn't been done since May 25, 2018 versus Louisiana in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
Â
Ryan Markwardt (1-1) started and went four innings with six strikeouts and allowed the lone hit of the game.
Cameron O'Banan threw two perfect frames of relief with three punch outs. Striking out two was
Braylen Timmins and
Shane Connell's lone recorded out was via a strikeout.
Â
Taking the loss for SFA was Noah O'Farrell. The right-hander surrendered five runs on eight hits in four innings.
Â
Jackson Cotton had a 2-for-4 night at the plate with three runs, two RBI and a home run. A 2-for-4 performance was also had by
Dawson Park, who also plated two runs and hit a double.
Â
The trio of
Ethan Farris,
Chase Mora and
Manny Salas went 2-for-3. Farris drove in two runs, Salas scored thrice and Mora came around to score two times and both of his hits were doubles.
Â
In the bottom of the first, Cotton led off with a single to left field. The freshman advanced to third when Salas singled to right, which was also mishandled by the right fielder. Park followed with a single to drive in the first run of the game. Farris added another RBI single two batters later to increase the advantage to 2-0.
Â
Austin Munguia drove in a run on a single back up the middle in the fourth. He would come home when Cotton blasted a 2-2 pitch down the right field line for a two-run homer. It was his 11th round tripper of the year to tie Park for the team lead.
Â
Farris drove in his second run of the night with a double off the right centerfield wall to bring home Salas in the fifth.
Â
In the sixth, two SFA errors directly led to three runs for TXST.
Jaquae Stewart capped off the scoring in the frame and the game with a sacrifice fly to left center that put the Bobcats ahead 10-0.
Â
Timmins struck out two in the seventh but also walked two and hit a Jack to load the bases. Connell was called upon and he ended the game getting a strikeout looking on a 3-2 offering.
