CONWAY, S.C. – Sunday saw Texas State (27-17, 10-11 Sun Belt) salvage the series with a 10-6 win over ninth-ranked Coastal Carolina (30-13, 17-4 Sun Belt) Sunday afternoon from Springs Brooks Stadium. It was the Bobcats' fifth win over a ranked opponent this season.
Â
"A great job by our guys today. Jaquae's grand slam to get us going and broke our streak of two-out RBI. We kept grinding away all day and felt like our normal offense," said head coach
Steven Trout. "Big day from
Bennett Fryman, as well, stepping in for
Ethan Farris. I thought our bullpen was really good and did a great job closing out the game."
Â
The team strung together 11 hits led by a 3-for-4 day from
Bennett Fryman, who fell a triple short of the cycle.
Clayton Namken was the only other player with a multi-hit game with two that included a double.
Â
Jaquae Stewart hit his fourth grand slam of the season, drew two walks and scored twice.
Dawson Park plated two runs and
Justin Vossos also drove in a run. Reaching three times and scoring twice was
Rashawn Galloway.
Â
Earning the win was
Dylan Kerbow (1-0) after he threw 1.1 scoreless inning of relief. Jaxon Appelman (0-2) surrendered four runs on two hits and walks to take the loss.
Â
Jesus Tovar started but only went 3.2 innings after giving up four runs on four hits, three free passes and hit two batters while striking out four.
Sam Hall struck out three in two innings out of the bullpen and
Alec Beversdorf punched out two in his inning of work. Finishing the game was
Kyle Froehlich, who retired all three batters he faced with two going down on strikes.
Â
The Chanticleers opened the scoring in the first with a run on a fielding error in the outfield that allowed Dean Mihos to score from third.
Â
Fryman opened the third with a single through the right side of the infield and followed by stealing second base. Both
Manny Salas and Galloway were walked to load the bases with two outs. Facing a 3-2 count, Stewart connected on an offering and sent it 364 feet to right field for a grand slam to put TXST ahead 4-1.
Â
After CCU got a run back in the bottom of the third, Fryman would bloop a double to center field. Galloway would reach base with two gone as he was plunked on a 2-2 pitch. Park was given the green light on a 3-0 offering and sent it to left center for a two-run double.
Â
Blake Barthol answered with a two RBI double in the bottom of the inning to make it a 6-4 contest.
Â
Fryman led off the sixth with a 371-foot blast to right center for his second home run of the season. Vossos would drive in another run in the seventh on a single back up the middle.
Â
The Chants were able to load the bases with two outs in the next half inning. A shallow single from Blagen Pado to left brought in one run. That was all the damage the hosts would do as Hall closed out the inning with a strikeout.
Â
A solo homer from Barthol in the eighth cut CCU's deficit to 8-6.
Â
Stewart started the ninth off by working a free pass. He would advance to third on a perfectly executed hit and run that saw
Samson Pugh single back up the middle. A wild pitch allowed Stewart to score and Pugh to move into scoring position. Following a deep fly out by Vossos to center that allowed Pugh to advance to third, the junior outfielder would score on another wild pitch on a dropped third strike to give the Bobcats two insurance runs.
Â
Froehlich punched out the first two batters he faced and then induced a fly out to Pugh to finish off the upset victory.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats is a meeting with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday at Irvine-Rasmussen Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
