SAN MARCOS, Texas – Senior
Rashawn Galloway hit his 22nd double of the season Tuesday night to set a new Texas State (27-18) record. However, it would be Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (22-22) coming out on top 7-2 from Irvine-Rasmussen Ballpark.
Â
Galloway reached base all four times he came to the plate as he went 3-for-3 and fell a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
Dawson Park was the only other Bobcat to record a hit with a single. Reaching base twice was
Manny Salas after he drew two walks.
Â
Titan Targac (1-4) took the loss after giving up four runs in 2.2 innings on five hits. Chandler Fowerl (2-2) surrendered a run in two frames while going on to earn the victory.
Â
Working two scoreless innings of relief was
Ryan Markwardt. Throwing an inning apiece without a run allowed with
Sam Hall, who struck out two, and
Cameron O'Banan.
Â
Galloway opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first that traveled 428 feet. It was hit eighth long ball of the season.
Â
The Islanders would record four extra-base hits in the top of the third that resulted in four runs to put the visitors in front.
Â
In the bottom of the frame with two gone,
Bennett Fryman worked a free pass. Galloway followed with his record setting double to left center that put two runners in scoring position. After a pitching change, Matthew Molina was able to record a strikeout to strand both TXST players.
Â
The score stayed the same until the seventh. A pop up to shallow centerfield was caught by Park after scrambling back from his drawn in position. Fryman would collide with the sophomore shortstop to knock both players down and allow a runner from third to tag and score.
Â
In the bottom of the eighth, Fryman led off by sending a 0-1 offering the other way but was robbed by the TAMUCC outfielder for a solo homer. A Park single was sandwiched by walks to Galloway and Salas to load the bases.
Jaquae Stewart came to the plate with a chance to cut into the deficit or tie the game.
Â
The junior ended up hitting a grounder to the second baseman that scored a run to make it a 5-2 contest. That would be the only run Texas State managed in the frame after a fly out to deep left center ended the threat.
Â
A double steal was attempted by the Islanders in the top of the ninth that saw the throw to third sail high and down the left field line. The error allowed two insurance runs to score.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats is a three-game series against South Alabama that begins on Friday at 6 p.m.
