CONWAY, S.C. – It was a pitcher's duel Saturday afternoon at Springs Brooks Stadium that ended on a walk-off home run from ninth-ranked Coastal Carolina (30-12, 17-3 Sun Belt) to defeat Texas State (26-17, 9-11 Sun Belt) by a score of 2-1.
Â
Both starters went seven innings and allowed one run.
Cade Smith struck out six and surrendered six hits while Ross Norman punched out four with three hits and two walks given up.
Â
"Cade was outstanding today and pitched at a very high level. There were also really good defensive plays all around. We had five chances to get a hit with runners in scoring position with two outs but went 0-for-5. You have to find a way to come through with two outs," said head coach
Steven Trout. "We have to show up tomorrow with an early start and go get after it to find a way to get one win on the road."
Â
Kyle Froehlich (3-2) took the loss after surrendering the deciding run on his lone hit allowed. Darin Horn (6-1) picked up the win after throwing two scoreless frames with three punch outs.
Â
Half of the Bobcats' four hits came off the bat of
Rashawn Galloway. Both of his base knocks were doubles that increased his season total to 21 to tie the program's season record.
Â
Also finishing with a hit were
Manny Salas and
Justin Vossos with Salas' also being a double. Driving in the lone run for TXST was
Ethan Farris.
Â
Galloway led off the game with a double but would be stranded on third. His second time at the plate again saw him smack a double. The senior would advance to third on a deep fly out off the bat of
Jaquae Stewart and then come home on a groundout from Farris that put the Bobcats up 1-0.
Â
The Chanticleers would tie the game up in the fourth on an RBI single. They had a chance to take the lead in the sixth when two batters reached with one out but Vossos was able to turn a double play to end the frame.
Â
In the top of the ninth, Salas worked a free pass and advanced to third when Vossos singled back up the middle with two gone. However, Horn would record a strikeout to strand the runners on the corners.
Â
A 3-1 offering with two outs to Blagen Pado was sent 384 feet to left field for the walk-off homer.
Â
Sunday's series finale is slated for an 11:30 a.m. CT first pitch.
