SAN MARCOS, Texas – For the second time in five days, Texas State (17-8, 4-3 Sun Belt) tied the program record with eight home runs in a game. The offensive performance led to an 18-6 victory in seven innings Friday night over Georgia State (13-14, 2-5 Sun Belt) at the GSU Baseball Complex.
Â
"Just an unreal performance by the offense. They have carried the momentum from last weekend and when we get the ball elevated, it's scary what this group can do," said head coach
Steven Trout. "Really proud on a day when we were short in the bullpen, they take the game over and put it away. Now it's about enjoying it until midnight and wake up confident and focused to go out and play well tomorrow."
Â
Ethan Farris finished the night 5-for-5 with two homers, two doubles and a triple. Also hitting two long balls was
Jaquae Stewart as the duo also finished with five RBI and scored three runs apiece. Finishing with a 3-for-4 night at the plate with a home run, two RBI and two runs was Clayton Namaken.
Â
Extending his hitting streak to 18 games was
Rashawn Galloway as the senior was 2-for-5 with a homer, two RBI and scored twice. Also leaving the yard was
Jackson Cotton and
Chase Mora.
Â
Picking up the win on the rubber was
Kyle Froehlich (3-1), who struck out two in four innings but allowed six runs on 10 hits. Tysen Benford (2-2) took the loss after giving up eight runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings.
Â
Cameron O'Banan recorded two strikeouts in a season-high two innings of work.
Braylen Timmins punched out the side in his one inning of action.
Â
After Stewart drew a one out walk in the second, Farris sent a 0-2 offering over the centerfield wall to open the scoring. Immediately following him with round trippers were Namken and Mora, respectively. It was the second time this season the trio had gone yard back-to-back-to-back at bats.
Â
The home run for Mora was his fourth of the season and 35th of his career. The senior is now one away from tying the program's record held by Paul Goldschmidt.
Â
In the bottom of the inning, the Panthers would score three times to cut their deficit to one. That would be as close as they would get the rest of the contest.
Â
Texas State sent 14 batters to the plate in the third and scored nine runs. Stewart would hit two homers in the frame that included a grand slam to cap off the scoring in the frame. Farris launched his second long ball in as many at bats after Stewart's first jack. Also driving in a run in the inning was
Dawson Park, Cotton and Galloway.
Â
Another back-to-back homers were hit in the fourth by Cotton and Galloway, respectively. Farris added a two-run double to increase the advantage to 17-3.
Â
GSU would string together five straight hits in the fifth that plated three runs.
Â
Capping off the scoring were the Bobcats in the seventh. Farris would triple to right center and come home two pitches later when Namken singled to center.
Â
Timmins came on and struck out the side in the seventh to wrap up the win.
Â
Game two of the series is scheduled for a 3 p.m. CT first pitch.
