Softball Splits Finale at Kajikawa Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TEMPE, Ariz. – Texas State softball split the final day of the Kajikawa Classic with a 13-8 win against Memphis and a 7-1 loss to Northwestern.

After a high-offense first game against Memphis that included 13 hits, 12 RBI and five walks for the Bobcats, the bats fell flat against the Northwestern Wildcats and Texas State split its final day in Tempe.

How it Happened:
Game 1: TXST 13, Memphis 8
Emma Strood started in the circle for the Bobcats and got off to a slow start, allowing a single and a walk in the first two at-bats. Fron there, Memphis hit a three-run shot to go up 3-0. They'd add one more on a single to make it a 4-0 game in the first. Head coach Ricci Woodard made a mound visit and Strood closed the inning out with two three-pitch strikeouts.

The Bobcats answered, though, scoring five runs in the bottom half of the inning. It all started from Keely William's third leadoff walk of the season. After singles from Harley Vestal and Karmyn Bass, the bases were loaded. Memphis walked Aiyana Coleman in five pitches to put the first run for the Bobcats on the board. From there, Kate Bubela hit a 2 RBI double to make it a one run game, for Mayson Garrett to tie the game on a sacrifice fly. Bubela would go on to steal home to score the fifth run of the 1st inning for the Bobcats.

Analisa Soliz came in to pitch the 2nd inning, retiring the Tigers in order. From there, the Bobcat bats continued to excel. It all started again with a leadoff walk from Williams; she'd go on to score from a Bass' double to right center. From there, Bubela would add another run on a single to left to score Bass to take a 7-4 lead.

Memphis added three runs in the top of the third. They came from a 2 RBI double and a sac bunt to tie the game at 7. Texas State was retired in order in the bottom of the third, including strikeouts for Mayson Garrett and Emily Fish.

The Bobcats added another three runs in the bottom of the 4th to take the lead, though. One came off the bat of Bass who had her second RBI double of the day. The following two runs were off Coleman's second home run of the season.

Soliz answered that inning with a 1, 2, 3 of her own with two pop ups and a fly out in the 5th

The Bobcats' bats came alive again in the 6th inning after another 1, 2, 3 inning from Soliz. Williams' double scored Bailee Slack who had been walk to lead off the inning. From there, Bass had a sacrifice fly for her 3rdRBI of the day to make it a 12-7 game for the Bobcats. To end the scoring, Savannah Coleman came in to pinch hit for Emily Fish and would hit an RBI single as her debut as a Bobcat to score her sister Aiyana Coleman.

Memphis got one run in the 7th off a fielder's choice, but they were unable to stage a comeback and Texas State won 13-8.

Game 2: TXST 1, Northwestern 7
Bass was the only Bobcat to reach base in the first two innings for the Bobcats. Kaili Witherell started the game in the circle, but after giving up a walk and a hit in the first two batters she faced, Woodard opted to bring in Maddy Azua.

Azua escaped the first inning unscathed, but a double turned into an error in the second inning found the Bobcats trailing 4-0 after two innings.

The Bobcats were able to put two runners on in the third but were unable to turn it into any runs. Northwestern capitalized on the scoreless frame by adding another run off a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning. After three, Texas State trailed 5-0.

In the 4th, Texas State scored one run off a fielding error by the Northwestern centerfielder after Bass and Coleman got on from singles. The Wildcats answered, though, with a two RBI single to right in the bottom half of the inning to go up 7-1. Abigail Jennings came in to pitch at that point.

Texas State did not score and runs in the 5th, 6th or 7th to make a dent in the lead the Wildcats had and would go on to lose 7-1.

After today's two games, Texas State is now 3-2 on the season.
