SAN MARCOS, Texas – Left-hander
Jesus Tovar threw eight shutout innings in helping lead Texas State (5-2) to a 5-0 victory Sunday afternoon to clinch the series over Gonzaga (2-5).

Tovar (1-0) recorded six strikeouts while only allowing three hits and one walk in his first win of the season. Taking the loss was Karsten Sweum (0-1), who gave up four runs on four hits and three free passes in four innings.

Cade Smith worked a scoreless ninth to complete the Bobcats' third shutout of the season.

Recording one hit at the plate was
Brady Boles,
Tanner Carson,
Jackson Cotton and
Dawson Park. Cotton hit his second home run of the season. Carson drove in two runs and Pugh had one RBI. Park swiped a career-high three bases with one stolen bases also being recorded by
Chase Mora and Boles.

Cotton led off the third by sending a 2-1 offering the opposite way over the left field wall for the opening run of the game.

The fourth inning began with Park singling through the left side. The sophomore shortstop would move into scoring position with a stolen base and then advance to third on a wild pitch. After Mora drew a free pass, he swiped second to put two runners in scoring position. Carson laced a single to left field that plated two runs.

Boles hit a single to right field and Cotton was walked to load the bases. Two batters later, Pugh worked a free pass to bring in the third run of the inning and put TXST ahead 4-0.

The Bobcats would again load the bases in the sixth with one out. Galloway flew out to right field to bring in the final run but a base running mistake allowed the Bulldogs to turn an inning-ending double play to end the threat.

Next up for Texas State is a Tuesday game against I-35 rival UTSA on Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
