SAN MARCOS, Texas – The bats went cold Saturday afternoon for Texas State (4-2) and the team fell 5-1 to Gonzaga (2-4) at Bobcat Ballpark.
Â
Only three hits were recorded by the Bobcats with one apiece from
Chase Mora,
Dawson Park and
Jaquae Stewart. Park scored the lone run of the game for TXST and
Samson Pugh recorded an RBI. Both
Manny Salas and Park stole a base as well.
Â
Picking up the win was Erik Hoffberg (1-0) after he struck out seven in seven innings and gave up a run on two hits and three walks.
Titan Targac (0-1) allowed three runs on two hits and walks to take the loss.
Â
Nolan Moore put together a quality start on the mound. The freshman struck out four in six shutout innings and only allowed three hits.
Â
Out of the six relievers used by TXST, only
Shane Connell tossed a complete inning of relief.
Josh Glaser and
Cameron O'Banan recorded two outs apiece without allowing a run.
Â
Park led off the second by drawing a walk and then stole second to move into scoring position. A pickoff attempt was wide and allowed the sophomore shortstop to advance to third. After
Zachary Gingrich drew a free pass, Pugh laid down a bunt that saw Park slide in safely to score and put the Bobcats up 1-0.
Â
The score would remain the same until the seventh. The Bulldogs saw three of their first four batters reach base to load the bases. Texas State had a chance to get out of the inning unscathed but were unable to turn an inning-ending double play that allowed the game tying run to score.
Â
Two batters and one pitching change later, Noah Meffert hit a deep ball into left centerfield. Gingrich chased after it and saw the ball glance off his glove for what would have been the third out of the frame. Instead, the ball landed for a bases clearing double to put the visitors up 4-1.
Â
Gonzaga would tack on another run in the eighth for the final tally of the contest.
Â
Sunday's rubber game is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
