Volleyball to Close Non-Conference Slate at Stanford Tournament

SAN MARCOS, Texas — Texas State volleyball will close out its non-conference slate for the season at a tournament hosted by Stanford from Sept. 19-21. 
 
Texas State will open the weekend against UCLA on Sept. 18 at 6 pm (CT). The Bobcats will also face #4 Stanford on Sept. 19 at 6:30 pm, and Hawaii on Sept. 20 at 1 pm (CT). All three matches will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.

THE OPPONENTS:
UCLA
  • UCLA enters the weekend with a 4-3 record including wins over Long Beach State, UTEP, Oral Roberts and Texas Southern.
  • The Bruins were 14-15 in 2024 and went 8-12 in Big 12 play.
  • Texas State has an 0-4 record all-time against the Bruins. The two teams have not faced each other since 2022.
  • The Bruins are led offensively by Cheridyn Leverette who averaged 4.08 points per set with 3.64 kills per set. Setting the offense is Kate Duffey who is averaging 7.70 assists per set, alongside Zayna Meyer who averages 6.18 assists per set. Their best blocker is Marianna Singletary who averaged 1.28 blocks per set while the digs are led by Lola Schumacher, who averages 4.19 digs per set.
#4 Stanford:
  • Stanford enters the weekend with a 6-2 record and ranked #4 in the nation. Their losses came to #1 Nebraska and #2 Texas.
  • Stanford had a 28-5 record in 2024 where they made it to regional finals in the NCAA Tournament, losing to #4 Louisville. Stanford finished the regular season #2 in the ACC standings with a 19-1 record.
  • Texas State has never played Stanford before; this weekend's matchup will be their first meeting.
  • The Cardinal offense is led by Elia Rubin who averaged 4.02 points and 3.25 kills per set. She is set by Logan Parks who averages 7.46 assists per set, and Taylor Yu who averages 7.21. The defensive work is done by Lizzy Andrew and Erika Sayer who each averaged 1.21 blocks per set. The digging is done by Spencer Etzler who averages 3.48 digs per set.
Hawaii:
  • Hawaii is 4-4 on the season heading into the week, with wins over Portland, Utah Valley and St. Johns.
  • Last season, Hawaii finished the season 21-10 with a Big West Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Rainbow Wahine lost to TCU in the first round.
  • Texas State is 905 all-time against Hawaii. The teams last met twice in 2024 when Texas State lost 2-3 on Sept. 14 and 1-3 on Sept. 10.
  • The Rainbow Wahine attack is led by Cha'lei Reid who averages 3.71 kills and 4.65 points per set. The attack is set by Adrianna Arquette who averages 9.48 assists per set. Defensive work is handled by Bri Gunderson who averages 1.40 blocks per set and Victoria Leyva who averages 3.90 digs per set.
NOTES TO KNOW:
  • 2024 Season Rewind: The Bobcats finished the 2024 season as Sun Belt Conference Tournament Champions and second place in the Sun Belt West Division with a 22-9 record, going 13-3 in conference play. Texas State won three-straight matches with 3-0 sweeps to win the Sun Belt Championship. The team was then selected to the Dallas regional for its second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
  • Preseason Polls: The Bobcats were selected to finish first place in the West Division in the 2025 Sun Belt Conference Preseason Poll. Texas State also had two players, Jade Defraeye and Sam Wunsch, be named Preseason All-Conference.
  • Win tHe daY: The 2025 team mantra is 'Win tHe daY' which serves as the team's reminder to do the work each day to get to their goals in the postseason. Texas State is hoping to make a Sweet 16 appearance for the first time in program history this year, and winning each day is what it's going to take to get there. Whether it's making sure work is done in the classroom, giving your all at practice, or in the treatment room, winning the day is this team's WHY for the season.
  • Returners: The Bobcats are returning four starters from the 2024 season, including, Samantha WunschJade DefraeyeMaggie WalshBailey Hanner.
  • Newcomers: The Bobcats are welcoming four freshmen and two transfers to the team this season.
  • Meet the Staff: Head Coach Sean Huiet is in his sixth year in charge and has a 121-52 record in his tenure. Huiet returns Keith Anderson (6th year), Charli Fouts (5th year) and Drew Carter (2nd year) to his staff this season. 
    • Additionally, Huiet has brought on graduate assistant coach Callahan Hefner to the staff. He joins the program after previously being a manager at Grand Canyon.
UP NEXT
Texas State will return home for the start of Sun Belt play after the weekend in Stanford. The Bobcats will host Louisiana to open the conference slate, with games on Sept. 26 at 6 pm and Sept. 27 at 1 pm. Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+ or fans can purchase tickets at txst.com/tickets.
