Keith Anderson joined the Bobcat family in January of 2020 and is responsible for the team’s defensive systems and training the middle blocker and libero positions. Anderson has been instrumental in helping Texas State win 20-or-more matches in every season since his arrival; 2024 (22-9); 2023 (20-10); 2022 (24-7); 2021 (20-12); 2020 (31-9).
In the 2024 season, Anderson worked with the Bobcats defense to help the team to 16 wins via sweep in the 2024 season. The Bobcats 22 wins came while playing the entirety of its non-conference slate on the road. Anderson helped the Bobcats to its second consecutive NCAA tournament appearance, following the Bobcats Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship. En route to the NCAA tournament, the Bobcats had three All-Conference selections in Jade Defraeye, Ryann Torres and Samantha Wunsch.
In the 2023 season, Anderson helped the Bobcats earn their first at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament in program history. Under the guidance of Anderson, the Bobcats finished the season ranked 4th in the country in blocks per set en route to 20 wins, including one over #13 Houston. He also helped the Bobcats earn five All-Conference selections including Defensive Player of the Year (Jade Defraeye) and Newcomer of the Year (KJ Johnson).
During the 2022 season, Anderson helped the Bobcats (24-7) finish first in the Sun Belt West division and 2nd overall during the SBC regular season. Defensively, the team finished third in the Sun Belt Conference in digs per set and fifth in the conference in blocks per set.
With the help of Anderson, Texas State saw several student-athletes earn All-Conference honors; First Team (Emily DeWalt, Janell Fitzgerald); Second Team (Lauren Teske, Jada Gardner). Fitzgerald (SBC Offensive POY) and DeWalt (SBC Setter and POY) were both named AVCA Southwest All-Region and All-American Honorable Mention. The 2022 season also saw Jacqueline Lee become one of just five student-athletes in the Sun Belt to average 4.0-or-more digs per set in league play and middle blocker Tessa Marshall finish second in the Sun Belt Conference and 26th in the nation with a .389 hitting percentage.
In his second season in San Marcos, Anderson was instrumental in helping the Bobcats reach their fifth consecutive Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship match after earning the top seed out of the league’s west division following a 14-2 mark in conference action.
Under Anderson, Texas State had a breakout defensive season that saw three Texas State senior student-athletes earn their 1,000th career dig as Emily DeWalt, Kayla Granado and Brooke Johnson all reached the plateau during the 2021 seasons. In her last two seasons playing under Anderson, Tyeranee Scott was credited with 221 total blocks that saw her become the Texas State career leader in block assists (378). By season's end, Anderson helped Texas State finish third in the Sun Belt Conference in total digs and sixth total blocks.
In his first season with the Bobcats, Anderson helped the team achieve a 31-9 overall record, including a 15-1 Sun Belt Conference mark, and a number 11 ranking in the final AVCA Fall poll. En route to a 2nd round finish in the NCAA tournament, Texas State secured the Sun Belt Conference Tournament title and picked up the program’s second victory all-time in the NCAA tournament with a 3-1 win over Utah Valley before falling to Nebraska. In addition to the 31 wins to lead the NCAA, Anderson’s coaching helped the Bobcats lead the nation in both blocks and digs.
Anderson assisted in developing four players that earned All-SBC honors in 2020; Emily DeWalt (SBC Setter of the year), Janell Fitzgerald, Tyeranee Scott were first team and Lauren Teske was second team. Fitzgerald and Scott were named AVCA Southwest All-Region and VolleyballMag.com All-American Honorable Mention, while Scott who was the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Most Outstanding Player was an AVCA Southwest All-Region Honorable Mention Honoree. Anderson also mentored libero Kayla Granado who led the nation with 548 digs, a marked that tied No. 2 in the program’s record book for most digs in a single season as well as three Bobcats that ranked in the top 15 nationally in blocks (Tyeranee Scott, Jill Slaughter and Janell Fitzgerald).
Off the court, Anderson’s mentorship has helped Texas State earn the USMC/AVCA team academic award in 2020, 2021 and 2022. Emily DeWalt, Jacqueline Lee and Tessa Marshall were all named CSC, formerly CoSIDA, Academic All-District honorees in 2022.
Prior to joining the Bobcats, Anderson had a three-year stint at the University of Delaware as an assistant coach. In 2019 the Blue Hens reached the semi-finals of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) conference tournament for the first time in three years. Under Anderson, libero Andie Hanus was named the CAA Defensive Specialist of the Year with 5.04 digs per set in conference play. In 2018 the Blue Hens led the CAA with 17.58 digs per set, a mark that ranked No. 22 nationally. That year, libero Andie Hanus finished with 5.17 digs per set and a No. 33 national finish. Anderson helped develop three All-CAA performers Maria Bellinger (2017, 2018, 2019), Andie Hanus (2019) and Ezgi Basaranlar (2019). Bellinger was also named to the AVCA East All-Region team (2019).
Before his time at Delaware, Anderson spent two seasons at UT Arlington from 2015-16 as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. During his tenure, the Mavericks had a 36-26 overall record, including a 20-12 mark in the Sun Belt Conference. Anderson helped develop two All Sun Belt performers, Stacey Koch (2015) and Qiana Canete (2014) In 2016, libero Taylor Murata set a program record for digs by a freshman (556). The 2016 squad managed to register 2,057 total team digs, good for 21st nationally.
In 2014 Anderson was a volunteer assistant at Rice University where the team finished 23-10 (11-5, C-USA) and fell to Western Kentucky 3-2 in the Conference USA title match. Anderson helped guide an Owls defense that led the conference in digs per set (16.0) and they finished inside the top 100 in the nation in total digs (1,915), digs per set, and opponent hitting percentage (.178).
Anderson, a Winthrop Harbor, Illinois native, graduated with a bachelor's degree in sports management and minors in coaching and psychology from Texas A&M University. Anderson played on the men's club volleyball team and helped the Aggies win a national title in 2010 while earning All-Tournament Libero and All-Tournament First Team honors. He was also a three-time SIVA All-Conference selection, two-time SIVA Libero of the Year and helped the team win four SIVA Conference Championships. Anderson is currently pursuing his master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies here at Texas State.
