SAN MARCOS, Texas – Junior Jesus Tovar recorded his fourth quality start of the season in helping Texas State win Saturday's contest 7-3 over ULM at Bobcat Ballpark. The victory sealed the series win for the Bobcats.
TXST improved to 23-24 on the season and 11-12 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Warhawks dropped to 21-26 overall and 7-16 in league play.
Tovar (3-5) worked six innings with three strikeouts while giving up two runs on three hits and five walks. Bryson Dudley recorded the final three outs of the game, two via punch outs, to earn his second save of the year. Brennan Eager (4-3) allowed three runs on eight hits to take the loss.
Matthew Tippie came out of the bullpen and struck out two in two scoreless frames.
At the plate, both Chase Mora and Dawson Park went 2-for-5 with three and two RBI, respectively. Austin Munguia was 3-for-4 with two runs, one RBI and one stolen base. Also finishing with three base knocks was Alan Shibley.
Both Travis Bragg and Ryne Farber had two base knocks with a double apiece.
The game was scoreless until the fourth. Munguia led off the bottom of the inning with a single up the middle and would later steal second. The senior catcher came around to score on a single by Samson Pugh to left field.
In the fifth, Mora hit a single down the left field line that scored Farber but the junior third baseman was thrown out at second. Coy DeFury followed by drawing a walk and Munguia sent a 1-1 pitch to left center that saw the junior first baseman score all the way from first to increase the lead to 3-0.
ULM got on the scoreboard in the sixth on a bases loaded walk.
Texas State responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Two of the runs came courtesy of a Mora with a bases loaded single. An infield single by Park with the bases juiced plated the other run.
Another run would be scored by the Warhawks in the seventh to make it a 6-2 contest.
Munguia would score all the way from first in the eighth on a double by Park down the third baseline to add an insurance run.
That run would be important as ULM was able to load the bases in the ninth with no outs. A walk by Dudley allowed the Warhawks to cut the deficit to four. The junior right-hander responded by striking out the next two batters before inducing a ground out to end the game.
Sunday's series finale is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
