SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State got great performances on the mound but could not come up with the hits as it fell 3-1 in the regular season finale to James Madison on Saturday afternoon from Bobcat Ballpark.
Â
With the result, TXST is now 26-29 overall and 14-16 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Dukes finish the season 17-38 and 10-20 in conference play.
Â
Austin Eaton (4-3) recorded a quality start going six innings and allowing just two runs on three hits while striking out five but ended up taking the loss. Griffin Polley (1-0) claimed the win with 3.2 shutout innings out of the bullpen. Tyler Muscar retired the final TXST batters to pick up his first save of the season.
Â
In relief, Matthew Tippie struck out five in his two innings of action and did not allow a JMU batter to reach base. Braylen Timmins had one strikeout among the two outs he recorded and Josh Glaser struck out the lone batter he faced.
Â
Leading the way at the plate was Samson Pugh, who went 2-for-4 with a double and scored the Bobcats' lone run of the afternoon. Alan Shibley finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and Austin Munguia reached base three times after getting plunked twice and recording a single.
Â
Also finishing with base knocks in the contest were Coy DeFury and Rashawn Galloway.
Â
JMU struck first with two runs in the first. The first came home on an infield single and the second was off a failed pickoff attempt by Munguia that sailed over Chase Mora into left field.
Â
Texas State was able to load the bases in the third with two outs after Ryne Farber and Munguia were hit by pitches and Galloway drew a walk. However, a strikeout ended the frame.
Â
In the fourth, Pugh doubled to right center and would come home on Shibley's single to cut the deficit in half. Farber was walked and a slow grounder moved both runners into scoring position. The frame would end with an unassisted groundout to the first base.
Â
The final run of the game came in the seventh when Ike Schmidly golfed a 1-0 offering into the netting above left field for a solo home run.
Â
Back-to-back singles by DeFury and Munguia started the bottom of the seventh for TXST. After a strikeout, Dawson Park hit a scorcher that was snagged by the third baseman and he was able to double off DeFury to end the inning.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats is the Sun Belt Tournament in Montgomery, Alabama. They will be the seventh seed after finishing tied with Arkansas State in the standings and hold the tiebreaker over the Red Wolves. TXST will take on App State on Tuesday at 3 p.m. from Riverwalk Stadium.
