MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Making just his second start of the season, junior Bryson Dudley threw a complete game shutout as seventh-seeded Texas State defeated 10-seed App State 3-0 on Tuesday from Riverwalk Stadium.
Â
Dudley struck out a career-high 10 and did not walk a batter in the contest. He only gave up two hits while facing the minimum to improve to 5-1 on the season. Liam Best (2-5) surrendered two runs on five walks and one hit while striking out six to take the loss.
Â
It is the first postseason shutout for the Bobcats since a 9-0 win over Stephen F. Austin on May 28, 2011. That was also the last time a TXST hurler tossed a complete game shutout in postseason play as Joseph Dvorsky struck out five and allowed four hits.
Â
With the win, Texas State improved to 27-29 overall while the Mountaineers ended their season with a 23-31 record.
Â
At the plate, Chase Mora went 1-for-4 with a double and scored twice. Also coming around to score once was Ryne Farber, who was walked twice and hit by a pitch once. The trio of Dawson Park, Farber and Mora stole one base apiece.
Â
Finishing with an RBI each was Coy DeFury, Rashawn Galloway and Austin Munguia.
Â
The bottom of the first saw Farber leadoff by getting plunked. Mora then reached on a fielding error by the second baseman. After sacrifice bunt by DeFury, Munguia grounded out to the shortstop to plate the first run of the game.
Â
A 1-1 offering to Galloway saw him send it through the right side for an RBI single to give the Bobcats a 2-0 advantage.
Â
That is all Dudley would need for the rest of the game. He allowed a single in the second and a double in the seventh. Both frames would end on a double play. The other seven innings saw the right-hander set App State down in order.
Â
In the bottom of the seventh, Mora hit the first pitch he saw back up the middle. The Mountaineer shortstop was unable to get to the ball and the Tomball, Texas native hustled in for a double.
Â
The junior third baseman would steal third and then come home on a single off the bat of DeFury to increase the advantage to 3-0.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats is a meeting with second seed Southern Miss on Wednesday. The first pitch for the contest is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
