LAFAYETTE, La. – Freshman Zachary Gingrich smacked a triple off the right centerfield wall that drove in the eventual game-winning run in Texas State's 4-3 victory Sunday afternoon over Louisiana at Russ Park. The win clinched the Bobcats' first road series against a Sun Belt Conference opponent in over a year.
Â
TXST improved to 15-16 on the season and 6-6 in conference play while the Ragin' Cajuns are now 16-18 overall and 7-5 in the Sun Belt.
Â
"Just a really gritty effort on the road to win a big road series for this team. A big week with three road wins and a great job of finding a way to win," said head coach Steven Trout. "It wasn't perfect, but we competed and I see this team starting to believe. Phenomenal week of throwing the baseball and playing defense while there is another big week ahead for this team."
Â
Carson Laws (2-0) picked up the win after throwing the final 3.1 innings that saw him strike out six while giving up just two hits. Matthew Holzhammer (1-4) gave up the deciding run while tossing three innings and recording two strikeouts.
Â
Making his second start of the week was Shane Connell. The right-hander threw a season-high five innings with two strikeouts but allowed three runs on seven hits. Both Josh Glaser and Braylen Timmins recorded an out via a punch out with Timmins' coming on one pitch after replacing Glaser in a 1-2 count.
Â
Gingrich finished 2-of-4 at the dish with an RBI. Both of his hits were extra base knocks as he added a double along with his triple. Alan Shibley was 2-for-3, scored twice and drove in a run. Also finishing with an RBI was Austin Munguia while Ian Collier and Chase Mora each scored once.
Â
Louisiana struck first when Carson Hepworth sent the first pitch of the game from Connell over the left field wall for his second home run of the weekend.
Â
The Bobcats responded in the next half inning. Munguia hit a 1-0 pitch off the left centerfield wall for a long single that saw Collier score to tie the game. Two pitches later, Justin Vossos grounded into a double play but that allowed Shibley to score for a 2-1 advantage.
Â
In the sixth, Mora singled to the shortstop on a hit sent back up the middle and swiped second. Shibley would hit a 0-1 pitch back up the middle that extended the lead to 3-1.
Â
The Cajuns responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame on a double and wild pitch to tie the game.
Â
In the next half inning, TXST had a chance to retake the lead. Munguia started the frame by being hit by a pitch and Vossos followed with a double down the left field line to put two in scoring position. After a pitching change to bring in Holzhammer, the next three batters would be retired in order.
Â
Shibley started the top of the ninth by working a free pass. He would advance into scoring position on Munguia's sacrifice bunt. Facing a 3-2 count, Gingrich sent the offering off the right centerfield wall for a triple that put TXST back in front 4-3.
Â
Louisiana was able to get the go-ahead run on base with two outs but Laws struck out Lee Amedee to end the game and series.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats is a trip to Waco to take Baylor on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
