SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State tied the game in the ninth to send the game to extra-innings but it would be 20th-ranked Troy picking up the win 3-2 in 11 innings from Riddle-Pace Field.
Â
With the result, the Bobcats are now 20-22 overall and 8-11 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Trojans improved to 30-12 and 13-6 in league play.
Â
Jay Dill (2-1) worked the final four innings and with six strikeouts and gave up a run to pick up the win. Carson Laws (3-1) punched out two in 1.2 innings but surrendered the winning run behind four walks and one hit by pitch.
Â
Alex Valentin recorded his fifth quality start of the season as he went 6.1 innings with five strikeouts while giving up a run on four hits. Matthew Tippie tossed two scoreless frames out of the bullpen that saw him strike out four.
Â
At the plate, Chase Mora went 2-for-3 with two walks and stole a base. Also recording a base knock on the night was Ryne Farber, Coy DeFury, Austin Munguia and Dawson Park. Both Samson Pugh and Farber scored a run while Munguia and Park had one RBI apiece.
Â
Farber started the game by sending the second pitch of the contest up the middle for a single. Mora followed with a single and DeFury hit a deep fly to center field that allowed the sophomore shortstop to tag and advance to third. A 2-2 offering to Munguia was driven through the right side to bring in the first run of the game.
Â
The game would remain 1-0 in favor of TXST until the seventh. That is when Blake Cavill hit a two-run homer to put the hosts in front.
Â
In the ninth, Pugh led off the frame by being plunked. A wild pitch allowed him to move into scoring position and he would cross home on a single to center off the bat of Park.
Â
Mora drew a free pass in the 10th with one out and advanced to second on a ground out. The Tomball, Texas native swiped third but would be left stranded there as the frame ended on a strikeout.
Â
In the 11th, Troy's batters were able to work three walks to load the bases. Then Houston Markham was hit by a pitch for the walk-off.
Â
Game two of the series is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time on Saturday.
