Bobcats Fall in Slugfest to #1 Longhorns

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Seven home runs were hit Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark with four coming from Texas State batters. However, it would be top-ranked Texas walking away with a 14-11 victory.

With the result, the Bobcats are now 19-21 overall while the Longhorns improved to 34-5 on the season.

Picking up the win on the mound was Cody Howard (1.1) after tossing 1.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Thomas Burns struck out the side in the ninth to earn his third save of the season. Taking the loss was Jesus Tovar (2-4) as he gave up four runs in his time on the mound.

Austin Eaton made his third consecutive midweek start and threw four scoreless frames with three strikeouts. Bryson Dudley worked 1.1 innings out of the bullpen with one unearned run allowed. Josh Glaser punched out two in a scoreless inning of action.

At the plate, Coy DeFury went 4-for-5 with two RBI, two runs and two home runs. Chase Mora drove in four runs, scored twice and hit a homer. Also with a round tripper was Zachary Gingrich, who finished 2-for-4 with three runs, two RBI and a double.

Drawing three was and scoring twice was Austin Munguia. Both Ryne Farber and Samson Pugh drove in a run apiece.

A 1-1 pitch to DeFury in the bottom of the first was smashed 423 feet to right field to put TXST on the scoreboard first. Gingrich added a solo shot in the next inning to double the lead.

In the fourth, DeFury led off by hitting his second long ball of the game. Munguia followed by drawing a free pass and would later swipe second. The senior catcher then came home when Pugh singled to left field to put the Bobcats ahead 4-0.

UT put up four runs to tie the game in the next half inning with the last two runs coming after a TXST error that would have ended the frame.

Mora reached on a one out infield single in the bottom of the frame. He reached third on a perfectly executed hit-and-run play as DeFury laced a single through the right side of the infield. The junior third baseman would slide in safely on a wild pitch to put Texas State back in front.

The lead would grow to 9-4 in the sixth when Mora unloaded on a 2-2 pitch. The ball cleared the right centerfield wall for a grand slam.

Answering back, the Longhorns scored four runs in the top of the seventh with three coming on a three-run homer from Casey Borba.

With two on and two outs, Gingrich sent a 1-2 offering to right field for a double that plated a run in the seventh. Alan Shibley drew a walk to load the bases and Farber would then be plunked on a 2-0 pitch to bring home another run to extend the lead to 11-8.

Those would be the final runs of the game scored by the Bobcats as the visitors scored two in the eighth on a Ryan Galvan home run. They took the lead in the ninth when Jalin Flores hit a grand slam to center field in the ninth.

Next for TXST is another midweek contest on Wednesday against Tarleton State. The game is slated for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
