Big Days from DeFury and Munguia Help Bobcats Even the Series

MOBILE, Ala. – Both Coy DeFury and Austin Munguia went 3-for-5 and combined for four runs and six RBI in helping Texas State win 8-6 on Friday at Stanky Field to even the series with South Alabama.

"What a really good win for our club on the road. I felt like our offense was really good early and late," said head coach Steven Trout. "Tovar was Tovar and had another quality start for us. We have to get some rest, refocus and go win a series on the road tomorrow."

With the win, the Bobcats improved to 19-19 overall and 8-9 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Jaguars are now 16-21 on the season and 6-11 in league play.

Munguia finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle as he drove in four runs. DeFury hit three singles and drove in two runs. Both Ian Collier and Chase Mora had an RBI apiece.

As a team, TXST stole six bases. It was the most in a game since also swiping six against Ohio State on Feb. 27, 2022. Ryne Farber accounted for three of the stolen bases and are the most since Jose Gonzalez also swiped three bags in Mobile on Apr. 7, 2023. Also stealing a base was Samson Pugh, Mora and Munguia.

Jesus Tovar (2-3) picked up the win after striking out five in 5.1 innings while giving up a run on six hits and four walks. Picking up his seventh save of the season was Carson Laws with three punchouts over the last 1.1 innings. Taking the loss was Mitchell Heer (5-1), who surrendered four runs on seven hits over six frames.

Matthew Tippie was the only other Bobcat to see action on the rubber. The right-hander tossed 2.1 innings and punched out four.

Farber began the game by singling through the right side and then stole second. He would come home when DeFury singled to left field. Munguia capped off the scoring in the first with a 2-run homer to left field on a 3-2 pitch.

Neither team could muster much offense until the sixth. Collier would bring in a run on a groundout to the third base while South Alabama scored its first run of the evening when Lucas Ismaili hit a solo home run.

Texas State scored three times in the seventh with two outs. The first run came on a DeFury single back up the middle. while two more were plated when Munguia singled through the right side.

In the eighth, the Jaguars scored thrice, including a two-run homer by Ethan Melton.

The next half inning saw Farber draw a walk and then steal second and third. Mora battled and hit a chopper down the left field line for an RBI double.

South Alabama would score twice in the ninth without recording a hit behind a walk and a wild pitch. Laws was able to get Melton swinging to strike him out to end the game.

The rubber game on Saturday is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
